I may be loud but it’s still the sweetest sounding diesel ever made. Nothing sounds as cool as a screaming Detroit.

Well, it does drown out the sound of one crying when he's driving a White with a 238 giving all it's got on a grade and a Pete with a 270 Cat (wasn't even working hard) passes and is soon out of sight. That was me hauling rock....crying because I could have bought a Pete just like it. That was 45 years ago and I'm still mad at myself for buying the White because it was cheaper.

    What engine is a 238?
If buying a Detroit if you want power make sure it’s a turbo model.

possible idea: take the 3 speed chevy and a sbc and swap it into the 5, then take the fhead and put it into the 3b. it would take shipping stuff quite a way tho, and no detroit.

That sounds like a more doable plan. As for shipping, that's an excuse for a road trip.

I do admit I have a soft spot in my heart for the sound of a wound out Detroit, 318 is what the Pete's had that we used on Guam. The Brockway's had 220 Cummins.

Back when I was helping my cousin on the pipeline moving mats there was a guy that had a Freightliner? COE truck with a 6v53T Detroit. There is no other sweet sound like it and it could heard from a half-mile away. The truck was originally decked out for towing but it was too light and the front end would lift off the ground when picking up other trucks so he got it on the cheap. I also had a great uncle who drove a Pete with a Detroit. I'd love an old Mack B series with a Detroit.

Unless you are talking horsepower a 6-71 is 426 ci an 8-71 is 568 cubic inch. A 6-53 is a 318 ci engine. I’ve never heard of Detroit’s being listed by hp only displacement with a T for turbo. A Detroit 2 stroke will not run without its roots supercharger. In the real world a Detroit with its roots supercharger would be considered a normally aspirated engine, the turbo would then add boost on top of that.

When I worked as a Detroit mechanic we would dyno test the new rebuilds. Most were 8V71s. The exhaust was two 4" straight pipes out of the building. It would really wake up the neighborhood at 7am when we would put them thru their paces.

The proper way to run and shift a Detroit 2 stroke.(y)
Mount the pedal to the floor and hang on.

My 1st road tractor was a GMC Astro with a a 318(8V71) with a 13 speed transmission. The best way to run it was wide open at 2400 rpms and start down shifting when you saw a hill coming.
