I have the original, unique to ‘72 cj5 cable clutch set up (attached), not the factory modified manual linkage that they did later that year as a retro-fit. Does anyone show a part number for the pedal return spring I’m pointing to in the pic? I ordered J5351118 and it is way too stiff and long. Keeps the pedal half way down it’s travel at rest.
I’m wondering if J0641723 which supposedly only works up to ‘71 is actually it or similar to it.

I don't have a book that covers the 1972 CJ. However, that won't stop me! :coffee:

If it were for me, and I was keeping the cable, I'd look for something from the hardware store that fit ok. The way this spring works is quite different from the later "clutch pedal over-center spring." Note the other spring with the rod through the middle of it and something of a clevis? The later part replaces both that and return spring.

If the '71 part works, it's just by chance, since '72 was the first year for suspended pedals in the CJ. All the earlier examples had through-the-floor pedals. Looks like more-or-less the right shape, and it's cheap enough if you don't have to pay shipping. The 1972 Wagoneer with this cable setup uses a 998762, which matches nothing by search.

What cable are you running now? The originals almost universally froze up during warranty. Jeep created the conversion kit to get out the resulting thousands of warranty replacements of the original cables. The cables froze up so tight that, with a strong enough driver, they would pull the bracket off of the firewall. Anyway, I would lube and clean the cable very often. The cable should be a great solution in this chassis, if it were reliable.

5.155-3, Jeep P/N 998762 would be the correct clutch pedal return spring.
5.155-10, Jeep P/N 5351118 is the over center spring.
Try maybe Barney's Jeep parts ? Maybe Crown makes them as well.

Thanks Tim. I’ll try the hardware store and see if I can find something similar. To your point, it appears to just be a simple spring.
Regarding the cable, what I have moves freely for now. I’m just trying to get the project to where I can drive it some. Probably won’t stay with that set up long. May end up going with a hydraulic one down the road. Have a lot more learning to do about that type of conversion though.
