Hey, everyone. I’m new to this forum and to rebuilding anything. Bought my wife a 1955 Jeep CJ5 out of a barn. What a Frankenstein this has turned out to be!!

I’m rebuilding the T90 and have a question.

R and 1st gear look to be working fine. My question/issue is N and 2nd/3rd. How is this transmission actually in N? Separation of input shaft and main transmission shaft? I ask because no matter what position my trans shifter is in, I’m turning my rear output shaft on transfer case.

did I do something wrong on the rebuild? Watched videos and read Novak rebuild. Can’t find my problem.

    help!!

I haven't started my first T90 build yet, but welcome to the forum. There will be someone here who can help I am sure.

Just thinking from what I have seen in the rebuild videos, is your stick moving the full range or is it bound up? Are your forks fully engaged properly?

Could you post a picture with the top cover off. My bet is the 2/3 coller is backwards or there is a missing needle bearing between the input and mainshaft.
I've also had some bad parts that caused weird issues. The countershaft needles needed extra shims and such.

Possible you did something wrong. The main drive gear (MDG, input) is connected to the cluster gear, and both turn constantly with the engine. There is a pocket bearing in the MDG that supports the front of the main shaft. When you turn the MDG, the cluster gear should turn and the main shaft remain stationary, with the MDG spinning on the pocket bearing in the MDG.

1st and R are sliding gears, and likely you recognize how those work. 2nd and 3rd are synchromesh, and when selected are connected to the mainshaft by the synchromesh hub. In neutral, neither of these gears should be locked to the mainshaft.

Are you holding the output shaft firmly as you turn the input shaft? If you used a thick assembly grease there is plenty enough drag to turn the output even in neutral.

As mentioned a picture with top cover off would help

Thanks, everyone. When I held the output shaft, it didn’t spin. Definitely some friction there allowing it to turn. I’m out of town but will post pictures when I get home.

Hey, guys. So I’ve taken transmission apart (again). Bought rebuild kit for T90 and a 2nd gear due to wear. I think I’ve figured out my problem — the sliding clutch is getting hung up on the synchronizer hub. Now this was a barn find but synchronizer rings look good and 3rd gear looks acceptable (?). I cleaned them up — first cleaning with vinegar/backing soda then brake cleaner. Just wondering how easy it should slide when I pull into 2nd or push into 3rd. Any advice would be great!
