I was looking at picking up a used full floating rear axle kit for a 1974 Dana 44 CJ5 axle. The problem is one of the wheel hubs is bent beyond repair. The hub I need is the one with the 6 lug bolts thru it not the 4 wheel drive outer hub. Warn no longer makes these kits and I was wondering if anyone knows if Warm built the own one off wheel hubs or did they use another more common wheel hub with the 5x5.5 pattern. Like a mid 70's Dodge or Ford with a dana 44 front axle?

    Thanks

    Mike

Is it possible to post a pic of the good one? Or get some dimensions off of it?

Those ‘look’ the same as the hubs that Warn used for the Dana 30internal spline conversion kit that I have. The kit part number is 37132.

The hub is Warn 36317. I also have a Warn full floater in the rear (offset Dana 44) and the hubs appear to be the same, but The instructions do not show a part number for the hub.

i have those on a rear full floater. I had the same ones previously on a 44 front that had 30 outers. I'm pretty sure they are warn proprietary, and are out of print. If you can't find a replacement, you could switch your FF to use D30 hubs with D30 27 spline drive flanges. Of course you would lose the internal spline part of it.

You could probably make this setup work in the back by machining the back of the Chevy spindle: Internal hub conversion

Yukon makes 30 spline internal locking hubs. I'm looking at doing this on a front D44 so I can run 30 spline outers with off-the -shelf spindles.

You can also get 30 spline pucks and caps if you want it locked all the time.

Fireball- do you know if the Yukon Gear YHC 50002 drive flange kit would work with this setup?

Yes, those should work. It does seem like the Ford 5x5.5 bolt pattern internal spline hubs are deeper, so the original Warn axles shafts might be too short to re-use. Custom shafts might be required. You'd have to get all the stuff together and do some measuring.

I'd be interested in a copy of those instructions and part numbers. I have an offset d44 Warn FF in my rig and the seals have begun to leak.

I have done that on many jeeps in the front, in fact doing one right now on my tux build. But have never tried installing the chevy spindle on a rear 44. Would be interesting to see what it would take. Obvious benefits of the internal spline and larger splines. Negative would be the longer stickout if you had skinny tires.

Agreed, it's not a great combo with skinny tires. The low profile Yukon locking hubs or slugs/caps help a little, but they still stick out a lot.

My 5 with the Warn internal hubs on the rear. 7.50-16 BFG KM3's. They stick out, and I wouldn't run this in the rocks.

Thanks for posting those install instructions, they look so much better than my moldy ones with my notes. I will be updating my file with this!

I was wondering if anyone has a part number for a Warn replacement locking hub for this model (not the drive flange) but the actual hub. The original part number for the Warn hub is 36655, I checked with Warn and they advise that they don't have a replacement for that hub.

Thoughts are that a regular Warn for a Dana 44 with 30 splines would work, and then just drill the dial and tap for a set screw.

    Thoughts

You also need a ‘blocking ring’ in the hub, a tube that fits in the spring to keep the drive flange from bouncing around. It is shown as the ‘spacer’ on page 8 of the Warn instructions, but strangely not listed in the parts. Maybe it is part of the hub.
FYI, I just replaced my rear locking hubs with Yukon gear drive flanges YHC50001 and they fit and work great.
