again, this depends on what you do with the jeep. some may never open the tailgate, and others may use it several times daily.

I use my tailgate very often, so I opted for the side spare, easy to fix, 3 bolts, add oak wood parts inside.
But it is not good with wide tires, better to use a light narrow spare as spare...
The fact is that the Jeep becomes wider, I never touched a wall but nearly.
Because it is rubber, problems are avoided, mainly when you enter in a garage in reverse.
If you don't need your tailgate, these systems are interesting, I was choosing them and understood the problem of the tailgate...
Going to the waste, or getting goods at the farm... it is easy like this.

Agreed, probably common, only a few ways to skin a cat. Although if yours allows the drawbar to remain - i think that's a very cool option.

I don't have a plan yet for the jeep. I have a plow for it i may or may not hook up.. I know I'll use it to knock around the yard for a few years. Then it will mostly be used to knock around town or taken to the beach fishing..

If it came with the side mount I would just use it. There is no internal bracing for the side mount and I only plan on skinny 31s

Well, you could just put a new side mount on, i guess? nothing wrong with that! :) At $40.00 with maybe a few bucks for reinforcing steel, upgraded hardware, etc. it's the clear winner based solely on budget.

I have no brace there, and I do not want to weld one in. I did think about bonding one in, I've use metal bond before and it is strong..

There isn't any one perfect solution. Jeeps are just too small, the tires are too big.

I use the original side-mount, but I will confess to taking out my mailbox once or twice.

THis is what I built for mine...if you don't use the tailgate often (I have a back seat so I never open mine) it's an ideal solution. The weight is held by the drawbar, but the tailgate chain holes support it vertically, so the whole thing can be small and lightweight.

This is a very good picture : impossible to understand what it is!
Maybe some place on Venus, or a secret place in Pekin forbidden city, or ... a detail of a CJ5. Very nice, top picture!

Another option, similar to some others posted is a very simple design that worked for my CJ2A.

    Pro's
    • Cheap
    • Easy to fab
    • Used OEM drawbar for support
    • Used stock Chain holes for support
    • Has ZERO moving parts
    • Was fairly lightweight which is important for these wee jeeps.
    • Has a stock MB/GPW look to it when done and painted.
    • Used stock CJ2A/CJ5 spare tire mount
    • Used stock blitz/aftermarket can mount (your choice - you could do a rotopax mount too.)
    Con's
    • Tailgate is immobilized
    • Mine wouldn't have worked with a PTO, though, I'm sure one could engineer around that issue.
