71 Wheeling Rig

    Got the rest of the Dana 18 case apart tonight.

    The lower gear set was no problem but holy heck the intermediate shaft did not want to come out. After pounding on the shaft for a good 30 minutes with the three pound maul, this is how far it got:

    You can see the movement lines for each hammer strike get closer and closer together. I should have just put it in the press but it was moving enough to keep me
    trying. I finally put it on blocks so it could react against the floor. That worked much better than chasing it around the bench:

    Then some post disassembly inspection. The lower shafts and gears all look pretty good. I could probably even re-run the bearings if I wanted to.

    The intermediate shaft has no pitting but there is a ridge you can feel on the loaded side:

    As expected, since there was end play, the thrust washers look much worse:

    The gear however, looks great with no obvious wear anywhere. It doesn't seem like I need any major parts so after the Novak rebuild kit it should bit good to go for a long time.

    Now it's time to start cleaning everything. That's going to take a couple of nights with all the caked on grease/dirt on the external stuff:

    Didn't get much time today due to other projects, but got more transfer case parts cleaned up. Slow going on the external stuff. The layers of dirt and grease have encased everything in a hard layer of adobe brick you need to chip, scrape, and scrub off. Different than the soft gooey greasy stuff I'm used to cleaning.

    Cleaned a bunch more parts:

    Used the ol' 2ft adjustable end wrench and the impact driver to get the yoke off the front housing:

    Teeth on the front output shaft look great, so does the bushing area:

    The 4wd shift collar also looks like new. One thing that doesn't look like new is the 4wd shift fork:

    I'm not sure if I should be concerned about this or not. It's on the 2wd side of things. It's almost like the detent was holding it a little too far back in 2wd and it rubbed all the time driving down the road.

    Anybody else have any opinions? I'm tempted to grind it flat and re-use it. Should I find a replacement instead?

  8. i would personally grind and use it, but if you're picky and wanna throw money at it, feel free to get a new one.

    Found a good shift fork on ebay for $18.00 delivered. Might as well swap it out while I've got this thing apart.

    No probably not this year. I've only got time for one and it's Tillamook this year. Hopefully the Rubicon next year, and then back to CO.

    Didn't get much time tonight because my wife had a flat on the wheel barrow. Nice Chinese tire. This is only 4 years old and has lived mostly inside. It's weather checked so bad you can see light through the tread. No wonder it got a hole in the tube:

    Patched for now. New tires ordered. Also made in China but hopefully better quality.

    I dropped the $35 on a flat-free solid tire for ours a decade ago and never looked back. We were replacing the tube and tire every year. I swear they make them out of recycled toilet paper.

    Same here. Only drawback is the flat-free are a little harder to push when loaded heavy.

    Yeah? I’ve found the opposite with ours. It’s really dense and doesn’t go flat under stupid amounts of weight like a regular tire. I guess like anything else, they’re probably brand-sensitive.

    I forgot all about those. When this next set goes bad, I'll switch to solid tires.

    I wish mine was like that, with a load of stone or gravel you can tell the difference. Still it's better than changing the tube every spring.
