To the original question. It was very common to have the dealer apply undercoating at the time of purchase. This could be any manufacture line. That undercoating from the '50's and '60's is on a lot of automobiles and the media blaster doesn't remove it well.I have used 3M undercoating in spray cans that works good and covers well .Did some touch up on the fender wells on a 1971 renegade that matched up good with original product.

The classic solution in the Boyink household is roofing tar.

I used it about 8-10 years ago. It has held up well although I do need to touch up a couple of very small spots. Jeep sleeps through the winter in the garage never seeing the salty roads of winter.

POR-15 if the Jeep is stripped. The stuff is amazing if it's attached to good metal. The entire inside and underside of my tub is covered in the stuff underneath the primer and paint.

When my dad bought the Tux new, it went to a gas station for Texaco grease. It went up on a rack and was pressure sprayed with an Alemite gun from a 6 gallon drum of grease. The whole underside, fenderwells, even under the hood, firewall, and inner fenders, about a 1/4" layer.
After 5 years of the beach at Hatteras, there were almost no floors left. Anyplace the grease didn't cover, like in the hat channels and bed braces, were just gone.
By the time I got the jeep, now 10 years old, I had to rebody with an A-1 military tub. Like Mike Boyink suggested, I used thin watery foundation tar sealer. That held up for about 20 years of the same beach use. I also used the same stuff when I went through our fire department's M715 brush truck and it held up great. The finish looks like thick black paint and was applied with a garden sprayer. I would stick the wand into the hat channels until it ran out the other side. It took a day or two before it dried to touch and wasn't sticky.

Dealers in the north east at that time would offer Ziebart undercoating a hard tar like spray that cracks over time letting in the rust. Other options would be spraying used engine oil on the undercarriage. I've seen a bees wax type of stuff that did a great job protecting a 59 f100 . I know mopar would add a wheel well and floor spray in protection in certain areas (like ziebart).

I've been using Amsoil HD on my new jeeps and it is really good stuff. Unlike fluid film it dries , and dries clear. I have a new jeep and I can see exactly where I missed. Two large cans sprayed the underside of a mid size truck and I had a little left. It stinks, I mean really stinks and stains clothing but was easy to spray on and not expensive..

Think I'll try Fluid Film on my M38A1 when I get it running. Have seen the NH Oil products advertising looks like the Fluid Film.

Lots of good recommendations for Fluid Film on this forum.

I often use the aluminized tar, made for mobile home roofs. Drys hard and clean, lasts forever. Good for any clean surface where you can brush it on.

Fluid film makes a black version now

I would say that's indicative of poor prep. I'm going on 5 years of it coating the underside of my car-hauling trailer and it's rock solid.

I too have had disasterous results from POR15. It was applied over clean sandblasted metal, and over an alkylid primer. It looked great for a few years, then started peeling - in sheets! You could find a loose spot, then pull up 8"- 12" at a time in large pieces. Yes, it was a light surface rust under it over the blasted areas, and nearly perfect primer in other areas. Its like moisture gets under it, breaking the bond.
I'll never touch it again. Anything important now gets 2-part epoxy primer, usually Southern Polyurethane (SIP).

The frame on the 64 CJ looks great. A couple of places will start to peel. It was well prepped, why does it peel in those spots?
Haven't heard anything bad about Southern Polyurethane. Seen it sprayed and talked to a rep. Planning to give it a try here in the future.

I have used the 2 part epoxy from Sherwin Williams and it is tough stuff on frames, my shipping container, and my garage floor.

That explains a lot.. I had to have it imported the last time I bought it and it took a day to dry and a week to cure. Now I see it's available here in the US but I have not used it so I'm assuming they had to change the formula to make it legal here..

Depending on on what you are trying to accomplish, there are a bunch of good products on the market that can be found at your local auto body paint supply store. I agree with the oiling/fluid films for corrosion protection. If in the process of/just finishing a restoration, I would consider using panel bond and seam sealer before oiling. To protect your hat channels, I would use 3M Cavity Wax 08852 and the long nozzles (I use this on my daily drivers inside doors, rockers, fenders etc.). If you are looking for noise vibration and harshness(NVH) reduction, there are a few other products and types that could be discussed if there is interest.

I'll second both these statements, and back it up with before and after pics upon request. I liked POR when I put it on many years ago, but it eventually flaked off in huge chunks.

    Fluid film is good stuff
