Can somebody explain to me how these things work?

Since the lower pivot isn't in line with the tailgate hinges, it looks like the upper part (where the tire mounts) has arms to take up the mis-matched motion when you lower the tailgate:

    Pretty clever.

It also looks like it has a lock you need to release before dropping the tailgate.

Hah! For the low price of only $653.21, Scoutparts.com will send you a life sized 3D model. In metal even! Scout 80, Scout 800 Spare Tire Carrier - USED - In stock now - International Scout Parts - Scout II Parts - Your Authorized IH Lightline Dealer

I do have a neighbor who probably has one. I'm not sure if he'd let me take it apart for measurements though.

Given the idea, it doesn't seem like it would be too hard of a thing to fab up.

A little while back I saw a Scout back seat, like what can be seen in the 2nd pic in Fireball's post above. I've been wondering about retro-fitting an old Scout back seat for my CJ5 jeep. I know the Scout is a bit wider between rear fenders, so it's not a ready bolt up, but I don't want any brackets in the way on my nice clean, flat, rear floor when the seat is removed. I could use the Scout idea, but mount the seat higher than the regular CJ5 back seat, picture side brackets up on a couple custom 4X4's perhaps, resting on the jeep fender wells, maybe with enough underseat room for my skinny spare with a custom space for the odd tool. I wonder if 'sterician's' Scout buddy is anywhere near central Pa. and might have a back seat for sale? I'm just in the raw idea stage for now, but I think it's a possible retro-fit potential for a jeep.

sorry not near pa, we tried to cut one down to fit but found it easier to fab a new one for my boys jeep. they are just plywood with foam and upholstery fabric attached to conduit type imaginary pipe. the inside of the one we cut up was almost dirt again they rust like a scout too.
