You have to be very careful with hand gestures in foreign lands where you do not speak the language. A friend of mine was in Italy and wanted to tell the waiter he was pleased with his meal, so he made the OK sign with his hand. The waiter stomped off and soon returned with his boss, both were angry and my friend was asked to leave the restaurant. The thumbs up sign will get you in trouble in most of Europe.

My company used to send me to Ireland for yearly planning sessions. On my first trip there I found that you never want to thank a cab driver for the "ride" in Ireland, and you sure don't want to hold up two fingers of the same hand when ordering two beers in an Irish Pub, as that is an insult going back to wars between Ireland and England where the English cut off those fingers of captured Irish archers, and later taunted them by holding up their own to show they still had them.

I have never been to France, but I am surprised you didn't get slapped.;)

I've had a tube of the ATE brake paste for probably 25 yesrs, and its only 1/2 used up. I used to just use brake fluid, but have used the paste lube ever since buying it for my VWs. The early water cooled (Rabbit, Golf, Scirocco) VW's rear wheel cylinders were really touchy when assembling with brake fluid and had a tendancy to leak after a few weeks. I was told to get the proper assembly lube to take care of this issue. Never had a problem since! Some of the ATE rebuild kits had small pills of lube, but other brands just had the rubber parts.

I too started to use Silglyde as an assembly lube for brakes a few years ago and haven't had anything happen to make me regret it.
My rationale was that since brake fluid was hydroscopic then coating the atmospheric side of a brake component was just going to promote corrosion.
The MOD service manual for my Ferret scout car specifies that the brake cylinder parts should be lubricated in that manner.

Ferret Scout Car!!!!! Pics in a new thread please!!!

I like the rationale of coating the outside of the brake parts with a lubricant other than brake fluid. Makes perfect sense.
