That is so weird. My 4.3ltr had a problem two days after I came back from the Rubicon. It seems my intake manifold gasket started to leak. I have a big leak between number 2 and 4 cylinder. Guess what I'm doing this weekend.

Do you have crank case pressure? If you pull the dipstick while the engine is running does air blow out?
At what point did this happen?
I would guess that the valve keeper broke and dropped it out or the stem broke just below the keeper.
What all parts were left under the valve cover? Spring, Retainers?
I would imagine that you would hear the moment it happened?

We did hear it go as we finished "fins and things" at Moab the first afternoon. It was HOT but the Jeep wasnt overheating.
I think going to start taking it apart over the next couple days and get the rest of the story. Going to have to pull the head no matter what. Just have to decide that I want to do it here instead of home in my garage.

This is not going to help much, and I do not recommend doing something like this, but thought it might be interesting to some.

When I was a kid a neighbor gave me an old Pontiac with a straight 8 flathead. I don't know who owned it before him but he said he never could get it running right, and had given up on it.

It had not ran in over ten years, but me and my brother got it running after cleaning out the fuel system and putting a kit in the carburetor.

It did not run very good though, real rough because it wasn't hitting on all 8. After spending all of my grass cutting money for half the summer on ignition parts and such and still not being able to get it firing on all cylinders, I noticed the three spark plugs in the middle came out dry and clean, while the other five were getting black. I finally pulled the head.

The engine had three pistons missing. A previous owner had put it back into use after having three rods thrown by removing the pistons, rods, and tappets for those bad bores and plugging the bores, and intake ports with carefully fitted wooden plugs wrapped with strips of cloth saturated with something to seal it.

So, there is a creative way to keep one running that could possibly be done "in the field", but I would consider such a course of action only if I was desperate to have transportation and lacked the resources to fix it right.

I've got pistons out in the shed from a motor that I used a rod from, would have to look at the size as I don't have it written down.

I've also got some hand engine rebuild tools.

I got my grandmother's '51 Chieftan when I was 13. That Straight-8 was so smooth, at idle you couldn't tell if the motor was running or not.

The amber plastic Indian face on the front of the hood would light up at night.

I should have called you first. It totally slipped my mind that you would have parts. I hit up Jackdog from his post above for some parts. He’s going to mail them me. I have all next week to get it done.
