I’m trying to install a CRT performance HEI on a Buick 225 V6 rebuild. I’ve shaved the edge of the intake manifold and installed a button head bolt. I’ve even had to grind off a little of the bolt. Two problems I’m having is one, I’m still not getting a lot of clearance when I move the entire distributor. I followed the directions to the letter. The screw down posts on the distributor hit the side of the intake above where the button head bolt is. I only get about an inch of movement left and right. The second problem I’m having is I cannot seem to find anywhere in the instructions or on the distributor cap the plug wire numbers. I found what I think is correct from some images online, but I would love to have it confirmed.
Now, when it comes to the CRT customer service, it absolutely sucks! I’ve left numerous voice messages and emails trying to get some kind of help from these guys over the last month and they just leave me flapping in the breeze. I’m starting to wonder if they’ve sent me the right HEI for a Buick 0ddfire. Any help from you guys would greatly appreciated.

The 1" Either way should be enough to adjust your timing . Since the distributor turns clockwise, just attach wires following your firing order. # 1 should be marked inside, ASFAIK

I surely appreciate the help! Please, forgive my inexperience, but how do I know where the # 1 wire on the cap is located? It is not marked anywhere inside or outside the cap. And when I do find the #1 on the cap, do the wires just go in order clockwise from there? BTW, this would be a whole lot easier if CRT performance would answer their phone! Im very dissatisfied so far.

As stated 1" should be plenty. If it's not you can bring it up to 1 tdc compression, pull and restab the distributor. #1 marked. Snazzy engine, nice progress. 9-FE87637-E8-B1-4602-97-C6-86-E4-B41-DF68-B~3.jpg
Firing order 165432 ( usually stamped on valve cover)

This is the image I used. Perhaps if CRT ever returns my messages, I'll suggest they use this image on their directions. Appreciate all the help.

Yeah, that is the same experience I had with CRT when mine kept eating internal electronics in the summer.
I had the same problem you do...and mine looks about where Rich M's is and his mark for No. 1 is right.
What I ended up doing was shaving off one of the hold down screws from the cap (That gave me some more twist and I have run it like that for a few years).

Ahh.. good idea. I was considering that but I was hesitant to start shaving plastic from the cap especially if I had to return it to CRT. Based on their lack of customer Service, I don't think id even be able to return it if I had to!

If you can return it, and money is no object, I think dui makes a longer distributor you can probably rotate more. I have basically replaced the all the electronic guts in my CRT after years of trouble.

100 percent agree. After numerous messages and emails, they still have not contacted me back. And if they ever do, my only question would be at this point is how do I start the return process. I don’t even know if this distributor will work because this is a fresh engine rebuild, but due to their lack of customer service I already have a bad taste in my mouth with this particular HEI. I would not recommend any of our jeep brethren to support this company.

I can't see your vacuum advance on either picture, is it aiming towards the side? Is your #1 wire to the left of the hei bump as in the above diagram?

I just installed a crt hei unit in my dauntless, and even though I have yet to fire it up, it sits fine with the vacuum advance aiming straight forward (about 1/4" from the fan!). I still haven't figured out how I'll address that one.

Edit: I see the canister now, and it's facing the opposite direction I was expecting (towards the drivers side). Same question, is your #1 wire to the left of the hei module?
