Now that the junk VP44 injection pump died for the 4th time, I have had enough of crappy Dodge electronics. Luckily, many diesel parts vendors sell a VP44 to P7100 injection pump swap kit. The P7100 or P-pump was used on 94-98.5 12 valve cummins. I scored one on Ebay for $900. I also ordered the swap kit. Going back to all mechanical! Also, the P pump is good to make like 1500 horse with. :sneak: The hardest part of the conversion is pulling the cam out so the timing gear case can be changed out. Tomorrow I'll hopefully get my truck back together and it will make noise once again.

That is on my list of things to do someday. If my VP44 had picked a better time to fail I'd have started on it last Aug.
Using the dowels to hold the lifters and pulling the cam looks awkward. Did it work OK?

Yes, the dowels worked great. Thats how everyone does it. The last 4 pushrods did not have enough room to come out, so I pulled the tappet cover off and lightly grabbed those lifters with some vise grips. On a Dodge, I believe there is enough room to pull all push rods.

When I had put the Cummins in my truck originally, I put the sheetmetal tab over the "killer dowel pin". With the new timing gear cover, I could not do that, so I staked it in place.

And the best part is, the truck is all back together and runs! It runs so much better than before, smoother and more responsive to the throttle. The $900 Ebay p pump gamble paid off! Only thing left to do is wire up the shut down solenoid.

As much as I love the torque of a diesel, I don't think I'll ever have another one. My 2005 6.0 f250 ruined me. I looooved that truck, but it didn't love me back.

Does the injection pump give you any warning before it goes out, or just leave you stranded? I thought Cummings (jk hahaha) never quit?

The 6.0 that used to be in this truck was great until it started doing 6.0 things. I could have fixed it, but then I still have a 6.0. I like the Cummins, but never liked the dodge chassis.

The vp44 that I used to have would just die with no warning. The p pump will not do that. It is essentially a mini 6 cylinder engine with a cam shaft that runs 6 individual injection pumps. Failure of all 6 pumps is very rare. The only way I could see it die is from lack of lubrication in the fuel. The low end of the pump is lubricated by the engine oil. I always add fuel additive, so it will be a happy pump.
