Here's the shot of the Canadian plates kaiser krawler was referring to:

It appears to be the same size (and attached through the same holes) as the trademark plate, but it and the serial number plate are riveted instead of screwed on.

Very interesting - thanks for sharing this!

As mentioned earlier, my '66 CJ5 doesn't have the 4 holes on the firewall. Its' an early '66, with a November '65 build date. It also is early enough to still have a snorkel cutout. I wonder when the 4 holes appeared?

My '67 that has these four holes in the firewall was built in August of 1966, so they were evidently added sometime between Nov. '65 and Aug. '66.

My Jan '67 and my '69 both have these holes, and like yours, original paint in the holes indicates that no screws were ever installed there.

Howard, do you know if the jeep this plate came off of was originally exported?

All depends on your definition of "export", from where I'm sitting it would have been an "import" :D

I believe it was originally sold in Canada.

Tonk, who I know was originally sold in California, does not have that plate or the holes for one.

That's very true, and an excellent point!

This lends even more creedence to the theory that these types of plates were installed on jeeps exported from the U.S....in this case, into Canada.

    Thanks, Howard!

This is interesting. The photo below is of a 1966 Willys pickup firewall. According to the owner's post about it ( Rare Aussie1966 Willys 4x4 Pickup ), the last U.S. Willys Pickup was made in 1964, but they were still manufactured in Australia after that point.

The same registered trademark plates used in jeeps made in the U.S. and exported were apparently also used in jeep vehicles manufactured in Australia. The references to Toledo on the trademark and serial plates evidently represent where Kaiser Jeep was headquartered, rather than a manufacturing location.

Somewhere I saw a post about the dataplate over the battery. I found this photo of a 69 advertised on CL.

And it has the four unused holes under the VIN tag.

Dash VIN decals were not present on 1963 CJ's, but these graphics by Mark Olsen show where they were located on the later-model ECJ5's that had them, as well as the other places where the VIN is located.

As far as I know my 1966 looks to have these holes (at least three of them) but hard to tell with all the other holes someone added

Yup, the 4 small holes at the upper top right (just under the cowl) are the VIN plate holes
