I'm getting ready to paint the frame on my '74 CJ-5. I plan on media blasting it tomorrow, applying Eastwood After Blast, then fixing some some cracks on the front crossmember and a rust hole under one of the axle bump stops with the welder, in addition to welding in supports in the frame above the rear spring mounts http://earlycj5.com/xf_cj5/index.php?threads/148487/ . I'll then spray Eastwood Internal Frame Coating where the frame is boxed in the front and the boxed rear crossmember. Finally I will prime/paint on Thursday, while the weather is still cooperating.

After searching on the forum, I'm leaning towards using an epoxy primer and a semi-gloss black urethane enamel (something with a UV protectant). I'll use PPG, since it's high-quality and local. I'd like to use the same paint on the axles, windshield frame, and the roll bar, among other parts, if that would be correct for a restoration.

    Any input/suggestions?

2 part epoxies work great. I also would coat the inside of the frame after the painting since the frame coat may keep the paint from sticking.

    Good plan.

I have only used the SPI black epoxy. Supposedly it now has UV blockers so you don't have to top coat it. My local distributor was great - I told him what I wanted, we arranged the payment, and he dropped it on my front porch as part of his rounds.

SPI has some interesting comments about Ospho (phosphoric acid) under their primer. I would guess that the Eastwood stuff is a generic Ospho. They require neutralization of the Ospho coating before priming. I would just paint as soon as the frame came back from the blast shop.

SPI has a forum which addresses your question - http://www.spiuserforum.com/index.p...-prime-a-truck-and-finish-out-the-frame.6273/

The guys at the autobody101 forum have been very helpful to me. https://www.autobody101.com/forums/

If you are talking about this stuff,

I used it on my CJ6. Works pretty good. It is thin though, and sprays out in a fan pattern. I ended up with splatters on my shop wall several feet away. It also is likely to drip on your floors. Just a heads up. It does get the paint where I wouldn't have been able to get with my usual equipment though.

Yes, that's the stuff. I figure I will cover with painter's tape all of the bolt holes etc in the frame, except for the one into which I will insert the applicator.
