    Hello,

Brand new to this forum and first post.
Not sure if this is the correct place for my question or not.

I have an opportunity to purchase a 68 CJ5. Asking price is $12K.

    It has -
    225 V6
    T18 (compound low 1st gear)
Dana 20 tranfer case 2.2:1 ratio (uses a couple of gears from an early Ford Bronco to the lower ratio)
    Power steering
    11" brakes (74 CJ5 axles Dana 30 front/44 rear)
    4.27 differentials
    Detroit Locker rear/ARB front
    32x11.50 tires (brand new)
Body is straight, no dents, a couple a rust spots.
Inside driver and passenger tub floor pretty rusty.

No idea if the asking price is too high or if this is a good deal so I thought I'd solicit some advice from the experts.

Any feedback will be greatly appreciated!

    Thanks,
    Fred

Seems high to me, especially if the inside of the tub is rusty. So much is non original you need to evaluate the quality of the work and in general the quality of what you're looking at buying. Also why is the seller not wanting to keep it after all that work was done? Definitely going to need pictures to get an idea of it's worth.

With all the updates being done, then is this worth it to you? Power steering conversion, dana 20, 74 rear axle, lockers all would add to the price of a non modified jeep. Pictures of the rust spots would help, but I could see paying 8 or 9k for this myself if the rust is just cosmetic. With rusty floors I would want to see the frame also.

If everything is in perfect working order and the rust is just cosmetic, $12k doesn’t sound like a horrible price in todays used vehicle market. Doesn’t sound like a great price, but it’s certainly not a horrible price either.

that said, if there are ANY issues aside from the minor surface rust, it’s overpriced for sure.

My thought also. But then maybe most of us here are out of touch with the new reality. I've seen some rather large asking prices tagged to what appear to be total POS's.

If you are planning on moderately difficult trail running, you should be most of the way, if not all the way, there with that combination of pieces.

I sold my 71 for 7500 a year and a half ago....I had solid tub, I did a couple of minor repairs....so I think way over priced.

I bought the CJ6 in my avatar for 6k and it only has one bad rust sport on the lower 'a' pillar.

Is it worth it to you to pay his price ?
    That's all that matters here.
What are you willing to pay ?

I paid 6K for mine a few years back, runs great and very very little rust.... Hard to say not knowing how bad the tub floor is rusted and how well the Jeep runs but to me the price seems steep?
txtoller that is a nice looking CJ how in the world did you part ways with that, I would no doubt put down 7.5k for that.....

It wasn't easy, but I have always wanted a '6' so it made it easier, plus I had to thin the rolling stock! o_O:rofl::rofl:

4.27 with the Detroit Locker rear/ARB front is a really capable package. It works on the highway, but it could use an Overdrive.

JMO...and somewhat reflecting what others have said....the jeep has been modified quite a bit, and those modifications would be the common recommendations from many on here for a very solid trail rig. A lot of us on here operate on the cheap, but guessing most of us would still be close to 10k to buy a decent jeep and then build it like that. So, if looking for a moderately built trail rig, but not keen on the time and effort of building, I don't think it's a 'bad' deal. But, these jeeps, especially modified ones, don't return money on the build. I do think it's overpriced - not because of the money put into it, but rather as a comparison of equivalent jeeps for sale. Additional, the condition of the sheet metal and frame rust goes along way in terms of selling value. So, I'd definitely check it out, make sure the mods are well done, and see if the seller would deal a bit - maybe 10k?

Thanks everyone for the prompt replies and detailed feedback. I really appreciate it. I have two pics but they are too large to upload apparently.

The rust on the tub is pretty bad. The frame doesn't show any rust and appears to be in good shape.

12K seemed like a lot to me too. I'll see if he will entertain a lower price.

    Thanks again,
    Fred
