I’m new here, so, bear with me. I recently bought a ‘75 with the 304. First thing i did was to replace all 4 springs and shocks. Ride is still stupid rough. And upon searching, i noticed the driver front bump stop is only 3/4” above the spring and the pass. maybe 1/2”. Is this normal, and can i simply remove them

what kind of springs did you get? if you remove the bump stops the axle may contact the frame or on a 304 powered jeep the oil filter/oil pump housing.

x2, do not operate the jeep without them on the right side especially, your oil pump will be history on short order. Guess how I learned this.

It is a major mod but you can switch to YJ springs and improve the ride quite a bit and increase your ride height a little while at it. Also there are many popular replacement spring manufactures, some appear to be better ride and lift than others. Lots of discussion on the subject here, a search will reveal lots of help for you.

What type of tires and tire pressure are you running? I’ve found that even 5psi can greatly affect ride quality, as can a tire with a high load range/ply rating. These issues are especially pronounced on our relatively lightweight Jeeps.

Thanks for the replies. I got the springs from omix, along with the shocks. As far as the bumpstops, i just noticed something. There are 2 sets in front, one set above the axle, and one set above the springs. I wonder if i can delete the one above the springs, since those are the ones which are so close. As far as tires, they are Hankook 10.5x31 at2. I’m going to start messing with the tire pressure today. I just checked, there are 25 psi in the tires

You can look and measure for your own opinion but if it were me I would probably not. I would assume those are probably more important when it comes to protecting your oil pump than the over axle rubber block. JMO. If I remember correctly those are the ones I had removed when I damaged my oil filter and mount, but that was a long time ago.??

So, i measured, twice, and took the bumpstops off, but left the brackets. That gave me about 2” of uptravel. The front diff is about 3” from the pump, so I’m guessing it’ll be ok, but, I’m taking it easy for now. Also, i noticed the PO had the pass side exhaust pipe routed between the rear diff and the tub, so, that only gives me about 1/2” of travel in the rear, and that one i CAN feel. So, i guess a new exhaust is next

Axle bump stops only effect ride when the axle compresses enough to have it hit them. If the axle is striking the exhaust you should be able to see where it is happening, either with a mark or worse, a mashed pipe.

Rough ride is a constant complaint with CJ's.

There are a couple of checks to do before getting too excited.
Loosen/re tighten all shackle/spring eye bolts with the vehicle on the ground to make sure the suspension is settled.
Remove the shocks and take it for a ride. Overly stiff shocks are, IMHO, the biggest culprit for rough riding suspensions.
    Drop tire pressure
Some CJ's came with ridiculous spring packs (my Ren II had 9 in front 12 in the rear). Prior to the lift I wound up removing a couple of leafs on both ends to soften up the ride.

And so, on the subject of springs. Mine are nearly parallel to the ground. Is that normal ? As I stated earlier, they are new, so i guess its right?
