Howdy all, been lurking for a while. What a wonderful treasure trove of information this place is.

I am working on a 1967 CJ5 that I purchased at a farm equipment auction. It needs some TLC and the one that currently has me wondering is the accelerator return spring.
It took me a bunch of research to find the tidbit about the block plug having a hole in it for the spring. Mine was covered in dirt/grease and the hole was plugged. After finding that info on this site I ordered a spring from Kaiser Willy. It doesn't look the same as the spring in the old photo in the FSM reprint I found online.
I then looked at the one on the Walck site and the spring they show looks a bit different from the one I bought.
I did install the spring I bought and I wasnt impressed by it. The hook end bent a bit under the tension.

Looking for some feedback if it really matters. at this point I am leaning towards ordering the spring from Walcks.

I am not trying to do a period correct restoration, I just want to have a mechanically correct solution.

Anybody have any thoughts?? jeep small.jpg

Knowing what engine you are working with would be helpful to know and will get you better responses. You can put that info in your signature line then it’s always visible to people logged in.

It really doesn't matter. Find a spring that feels like good tension. Mine goes to an elbow under the carb.

I have a 198 with a Rochester carb. I ended up buying a dorman spring assortment kit and used the two silver springs. the longer black springs would have worked as well, but I ended up using them for my dad’s inline 6 mustang.

Thanks for the replies. I knew I could just add about any sort of spring as long as it works. I was more asking about the original bell crank spring setup.

I have no idea on the wheels. They were one it when I bought it and have yet to take them off to do any sort of investigation. That is coming soon since I am working on the brakes at this time also. The master cylinder just got replaced and will be bleeding the entire system this weekend. I am fairly certain it will lead to bad rubber hoses, rusted metal lines, and bad wheel cyclinders.

When it comes to brakes doing it all at the same time is the best way. Don't assume anything unknown is good.

I'd order the spring from Walck's and give it a try. The original system does work good.

Your thinking is where I think I was headed. I will order that spring from them and see how it goes. I do need the "V" shaped one under the gas pedal as well so will just get both in one shot.
