Seat Adjust

Sorry if this is a stupid question but I am trying to adjust the drivers seat on a 1968 jeep cj5 with the under seat gas tank,,I see the holes that are in the body to move the seat frame but my question is should they have threads on them or something underneath for the bolt to tread into,,it seems like there is a nut on the bottom of my bolt and it just spins when I go to loosen it,and there is very little room to get a wrench or anything in there to hold it because there is very little room because of the gas tank,any help or suggestions I would appreciate,,thank you...

 

Not sure whats stock, but mine has a threaded rectangular piece of metal instead of a nut. The threaded piece fits under the door sill, so it can’t turn when tightening or loosening the bolt.

you could accomplish the same thing by welding a little tab onto the nut, or drilling and tapping a piece of bar stock.

as for getting the existing nut out, I’d use a socket on a relatively long breaker bar and slide it in from the front, in the gap between the body and gas tank.

 

Here is what is on the passenger side of mine. You can probably make an 80/20 tee-nut work or a weld nut, just don't weld it.

At least in the mid-60’s, my Tuxes have a piece of bar stock about 4-1/2” long with threaded holes matching those in the body edge. One bolt holds the bar stock in place, while any of the other holes are available to mount the seat bar in the desired position.

I would like to thank everyone for the information, I know my tub is the original tub and in not so good condition but dosent have any type bar rectangular nut as pictured,my guess one of the previous owners either changed or lost the original fasteners and and just made do after they made there adjustment. At least I know what should be there and it all makes sense seeing how it should be, thank you again for the help...

 

Do you really need to adjust the seat?
I'm 6' so my seat is as far back as it can go. My son is 5'7" and can drive it just fine. Seems like you'd have to be very short to need the seat further forward.

 

The seat is all the way forward and I need to move it back, and thank you for the suggestion about being under the tank I will have to look there for sure...

 

My '60 has the threadded bar as well.
It would need to be .625" wide to fit in the channel.

Threaded bar, also. It should have an extra bolt and is designed to spread the load on the edge of the body. The question is... how are you going to move the rear bolts back as that is a fixed position?

 

On my seat frame, the passenger side and rear of the frame have three holes. So the bolt remains in a fixed position on the floor of the Jeep, but it goes thru a different hole in the frame as you slide the seat forward or back. Not mine, but here’s a picture I found that explains it better than I can:

 

Thanks! Not sure what year it changed, but I believe the 1968 adjusted the seat on holes through the bracket to seat mounting holes. I have modified my brackets to some forgotten origin seat sliders.
Pushed the seat to fender well for me. If someone short [GF] or whoever, it can be moved forward. Though I seriously doubt anyone else will be behind the wheel. But just in case...lol!

 

My split bench hits the fender well before it can go back anyway. I am short too so no harm anyway.

 

It seems there are different seat frames over the years and the way they fasten to the body and I am sure people switch frames so it's possible the frames are not correct for the year jeep they are in,in my case even if I didn't want to adjust it but just wanted to remove it say to remove the gas tank I still have this problem of the bolt and nut and not the threaded bar or weld nut type fastener so with all the help and pictures at least I know what is needed to correct my problem. Thank you all very much...

 

Somewhere in the mid 60's, the design of the seats and frames changed. Yours should look more like this.




You can unbolt the seat from the frame to change positions, a ratcheting box end wrench is your friend here.

 

Thank you for the picture,I recently purchased this jeep as a retirement project so I will have to look a bit closer at the seat bottom and see if it has those bolts holding it to the frame, as I said I don't know if all is original or how much things have been changed,I am new to this and have alot to learn,I know this is just a small issue but I ran into this when I tried to remove the seat to access the gas tank for cleaning or possible replacement,again thank you and everybody for all the help...
