Replaced tank with an OMIX Ada 15 gallon and want to protect it. Really struggling to find something that fits or could be adapted. The tank is bolted to the frame without straps which I'm pretty sure was the oem way. Thoughts?

On mine, the skid plate is what actually bolts to the frame, and the tank sits in it.

On the 71-75, the tank bolts to the frame and the skid bolts separately to the frame. This is the set up I used as a retrofit into my ecj5 - got the skid from a junkyard jeep. I do not know of a supplier for this skid beyond finding used. In retrospect, using the more common 76 and later set up that Doug describes with the tank in the skid and only the skid bolting to the frame is probably easier in terms of getting parts etc.

If you cannot find one might check with MTS, the poly fuel tank makers. I believe they sell most of the parts.

Just my 2 cents: I would recommend the later or aftermarket tanks and skids.
The factory set up has some of the most difficult access points. Reaching the tank bolts and forward skid bolts is a PITA!
It's easier to pull an engine than drop the factory tank. Some guys cut a hole in the floor to replace the sending unit due to this trouble.

All great info. Had a polytank and no skid and that grenaded. I found a new tank cheap. That's now in and I thought the skid would sort of wrap around it and I could get to it later. Not so much. Now wish I'd replaced the tank and skid together with later model parts but too late now.
