Desperately Need Iron Duke Part

    Hey y’all. Been a loooong time for me…but back to working on some projects. Unfortunately, I need a part that seems to be unobtainium. Hopefully someone can help. I have checked EVERYWHERE online and called many Jeep parts yards. I need the pushrod guide plate for cylinder #4 on an Iron Duke CJ engine. It is specific to cylinder #4 and will have number “4” stamped on it. Part number is GM 10012918. Mine was extremely bent and binding the rod, and upon trying to straighten, it broke. Jeep is down until I get one. Please let me know if anyone has one. Thanks!! CJ

    The Jeep p/n is: 8132245 for #4 guide if that helps.

    I am thinking you could use an adjustable guide plate. There are many brands of these, they are not expensive, and they are better than stock. I have used them on SBC engines when converting to roller rockers because the stock plates won't center the rollers. Very simple to install.

    Summit has a pretty good variety of these, based on the size push rods used in the engine which for your 4 cylinder are probably 5/16".

    I kinda looked into the adjustable plates. Just didn't see any that were in the right layout…flat yet staggered. Seems they were all catered to the “common” engines. Will keep looking. I am open to it if will work properly.

    Nothing comes up for a search of that Jeep part number. Thanks for the info though. Anything is worth exploring.

    It seems like you need to hit the wrecking yards looking for S-10s, Fieros, Cavaliers, ...whatever.

    Yeah…unless someone on here has one layin in the back yard…I may have to hit the streets. I got excited right away because I found one on Fleabay, and until I tried to install it, I noticed that the mounting holes were 3/8” instead of 5/16”. Thus…apparently…at some point, GM switched to a 3/8” rocker stud. I fear it was when the engine went to a 60 degree bell housing and went into the GM line as you mentioned. If it is specific to the 78-82 90 degree bell housing variety, I may be in BIG trouble. I know they switched to 3/8”…I just don't know when yet. I tried the postal LLV route to no avail. I haven't checked in the boat/mercruiser realm yet. Thats next.

    Can it be welded then cleaned up with a flap disc?

    They are hardened steel which is probably why it broke when you tried to straighten it. If you do attempt welding the piece should be re-hardened afterwards by heating cherry red and quenching in oil.

    I tried to help find the part, and did look at the Mercruiser stuff but those have an entirely different head on them.

    The inline 4 Cylinders are popular with some hot rodding groups, and there are several forums out there for inline hotrods, you might have some luck if you post a question on one of those forums.

    I also saw some very similar guides on Ebay. If the issue is just the bigger holes seems you could remedy that with some flat washers. There isn't going to be a lot of stress on these guides and as long as they are clamped down tight they should work.

    Most types of steel, this will leave a part glass-brittle. Tempering is a second step required for durability.

    A second possibility is that a part may be "case hardened," where only the high-carbon surface is hardened, but the low-carbon steel core retains ductility. In which case just the quench alone may work.

    I believe we need to clarify which "iron duke" we are looking at. If. I'm not mistaken the name was on at least three designs and the later 2.5 in the s10 was all metric.

    Believe it or not…Rob at Willys Works in Tucson found one in his stash!! I was shocked. Now I just need to figure out how to get it from him. He is a good 4-5 hour round trip drive away. Hopefully he will mail it to me. Thanks for all the help guys. It is definitely a hen’s tooth. Have yall seen that Blueprint Engines is working on an LS based head version of the 2.5 that will put out like 400hp and over 500ft/lbs of torque!! Whoa. Sign me up!!!

    I haven't see the LS based head upgrade but I have seen SBC heads used on those engines.

    Honestly, it's a neat idea, and I can see applications, for sure, if the price is right.

    I am a *little* annoyed, the way the HP/Torque numbers are being reported, as they keep showing a naturally aspirated display mule, but then talking about "predicted numbers" with turbocharging.

    Ayuh,..... It's not a different head,.... It's a completely different motor,.....

    The 2.5l motor used in boats is the Chevy pattern motor, 153 cid,..... used only in the original Chevy II,...
    The 2.5l motor used in GM cars, 'n trucks is the Pontiac pattern motor 151 cid,.... The Iron Duke,...

    Boats also used the Chevy pattern 3.0l, 181 cid,..... which has never been used in an automobile,....

    Yes, the Mercruiser 4ycl was derived from the 153 Chevy engine, I have owned several Chevy IIs with the 153, and a couple of boats with the marine version.

    Yes, the "Iron Duke" is a newer design. I owned a 1978 Chevy Monza with the earlier version of the "Iron Duke", which had a reverse flow head, and the later version "Iron Duke" with the crossflow head was also a "Completely different" engine from the earlier one.



    I have worked on cars long enough to know that some parts are often the same for various applications. It was worth a look at the marine engine, and at guides used on other engines whether 4 cylinder or not.
