Ok, so im back and forth on the spare tire. I hate the side mount idea, and want a rear tire carrier or swap the back bench seat for a single bucket and run it inside...what has everyone else done?

Should be all sorts of threads on tire carriers. Do a search. The stock side mount was no doubt cheap but, IMO, a parade item only. They don't last long on any real trail.

I built a swing down carrier for mine.
It bolts to the drawbar mount and pins into the factory chain slots. Simple, lightweight, no extra holes in the body. The drawback is it's in the way of the tailgate when open. I have a rear seat and almost never open the tailgate so that's a non issue for me.

How big of a spare is it? There was once a reinforcement kit for the tailgate... it's good for a compact spare.

Then there are body mounted swing aways for typical wheels
And frame mounted for bigger stuff

Fwiw I plan to make a body mounted swing away tied into frame to roll cage supports.
It's all in my head for now but I can draw a pretty picture.

I have, problem is i dont know what to call it exactly, and alot of what i saw was people looking for parts etc.

I like that, did you make it?

it would probably be only 31s. i will add a roll cage when i get to that part and thought of a roll cage mounted tire..(vertical rear bar instead of angled)
Curious what your idea is as a rough idea, dont want to give it away if you dont want to.

True enough. They are tough on rural mailboxes, too. DAMHIK.

But I've come to enjoy mine, because the nothing says "Early Jeep" quite like that unique visual trademark.

That's where I'm at. For me the side mount worked out best, of course reinforcing the area is a requirement. And yes, it says "Early Jeep" all over it. I tried the factory tire and gas can holder but didn't like the pain in the butt part of swinging it out every time to access the back.

    Fer sher.

My original OEM spare tire has only been on there for 67 years, and the sheet metal is getting fatigued already. Might have been okay though, if I didn't hit the mailbox so often.

Original size is not quite so hard on that corner, larger tires definitely create much more leverage. Of course catching on trees and such doesn't help much either.

the idea why you guys like the side carrier is why i want the "Willys" emboss on the back to show....which is why im leaning towards an single bucket seat inthe rear with the tire next to it. but idk

Maybe it depends on how you plan to use your rig? 4 wheeling Jeep? Restored cruiser? The Dirt Worx bumpers are pretty good for a trail / 4 wheeling jeep. Several members here including myself have them. Although not completely bolt on (they require rear crossmember reinforcement, and some drilling...etc on our rigs), they are certainly strong and rugged. And he's based in SOCAL, so a transaction should be easy.

I use a period correct body mounted swing away tire carrier
body mounts reinforced on passenger side . matching plates inside
Bottom of tire (inside) touches bumper . that helps with the annoying carrier rattle
in my case it does cover the jeep name on tailgate . but it doesn't bother me

I made a set of corner guards and built a tire carrier from there.

IF you don't use the tailgate a lot, which I can't see why you would need to if you have a back seat in the way of the cargo area, you could add some reinforcement to the tailgate, bolt it on instead of the chain hooks, and use a M38 style spare tire carrier.

And for me, that $#@&* side spare is a pain to take the winter top off and on, especially putting it on.

I plan on a receiver on each side of the frame. Then i can build whatever I want off of those. Build a street tire carrier and and offroad carrier.
Stout and adaptable. Tail gate bolted shut as I rarely use it.

Nice, but not $550 nice. You could buy a pile of steel for that if your into rolling your own.
