I recently bought this '66 CJ5. I'm trying to understand how the windshield folds down. Attached are photos of the hood and the windshield. There is a latch at the top center of the windshield that looks like it should hook onto a footman loop on the hood. The two U bolts on the hood are not in line with the latch and the footman loop is not in the right place either. Does anyone know if this latch is meant to line up with something on the hood? If not, what holds the windshield when it's down? Thanks!

Your hood seems to be newer than the rest of the jeep. The hood should only have one tall standoff that is centered that strikes the catch when the hood is up. There is a strap that holds the windshield down to the short loop on the hood but in my experience if you are not in low range keep the windshield up and the bugs out of your teeth.

This has been covered with some really good pictures before so you should be able to find them in the search tool. (Fireball has all three windshield configurations in his collection)

What Jw60 stated. There should only be two footman loops. The smaller one in the center is used to strap the windshield too when it is folded down. There should be a taller footman loop towards the front of the jeep which would catch the latch and hold the hood up when working in the engine compartment. Even though this thread shows an M38 hood, this is the set up your hood should have and shows the canvas strap - Windshield Tie Downs | ECJ5 (earlycj5.com). The strap is usually located to the left of the rearview mirror. Hope this helps.

As others have noted, I have all types of windshields and hoods. Scroll through this thread to find details and pictures of the straps, latches, and footman loops: Windshield Swap Flat Top To Curved Top.

Your hood is from a '69-'71 Jeep and doesn't match the windshield. The latch on the windshield is to hold hood up on a windy day and connects to a tall footman loop on the front of the original hood. The smaller centered footman loop is to strap the windshield down with one of these straps: https://www.kaiserwillys.com/produc...-hold-down-strap-black-fits-55-71-cj-5-m38a1/.

Your hood has the footman for the tie down strap but has two tall standoff footman loops for a curved top glass '69+ windshield. Your flat-top glass windshield has the standoffs attached to it.

As long as your tall loops and standoffs don't interfere, you really just need the canvas strap.
