So I managed to take the project cj5 for its first at least legal road trips since 78 this week. A 3 mile drive on Tues and a 5 mile drive (with a top speed run of 58mph Wednesday). The old gal is coming along nicely. Do have a drip out of the fuel line fitting at the bottom of the tank so will be ordering new lines and likely a tank as I tend to think the the line won't come out cleanly and that the tank from sitting that long might be the issue anyways but there is no e brake return spring on it. It is a 65 CJ5 but sold in late 64 new. Reading up it seems that the early models had a crossmember like piece with a bracket on there I've spend quite some time looking for evidence for where this crossmember would have been and there isn't anything on the floor that I would say were spot welds holding this piece there. Did this era cj have this crossmember and if so anybody have a pic of it, if not where do I route the spring and rod also, is the spring and rod Kaiser sells the proper length if I don't have a cross member? Great fun driving the thing. Yeah that first turn was a bit scary and honestly I'd rather take my 61 Royal Enfield to its top speed of 130mph then the Jeep 55 but at least it is a start.

Here is a video which clearly shows how the spring is attached. It is on an older Jeep, but this particular thing remained the same up through all the Jeeps with a driveline drum parking brake.

Watched it weeks ago, However, as I said, I don't have such cross member and zero evidence that one was ever there so no not exactly clear hence the question. :) As solid as the entire thing is for a Pennsylvania jeep no less I don't see this one crossmember being 100 percent rotten off while all the others are there and intact.

Perhaps you have a later, or a reproduction tub.

It is just something to hook a spring to, you should be able to fabricate something fairly easy.

On my 1970 the spring was attached to the cross member on the rear of the frame and not attached to the body that was to the rear of the transfer case.

My Grandson's CJ5 was built in '65 and is titled as a '67. These photos show the emergency brake arm/clevis and the actuating cable. All of my manuals label this as the "transmission brake". The cable on this Jeep pulls and pushes the arm. It doesn't have a return spring and I don't see any place for a spring to attach as shown in the video above. I hope these are helpful.

I don’t have a great picture, but mine has a spring attached to a chain that eventually attaches to the frame where convenient. It was done by the PO. Looks sketchy but works great. D7E3B7A7-9F1D-4DAF-B0EC-494620106B89.jpeg

Yep. Baling wire works too. It's not rocket surgery.

Thanks everyone, I have a hole in the next crossmember that looks like it would work but all seemed odd. 99.9 percent sure it is the original tub. Even still has the original wood in there at the front of the tub but I didn't expect tubs to be slightly different but want to get that working so just in case the brakes should fail I got something aside from gearing down. Did 10.4 miles on her in a trip today so she's coming along, the rings seem to have unstuck themselves as no more smoking and most of the unsettling noises have disappeared. Brought her home and gave the interior and windows a good bath. Almost light a new Jeep now. :)
