Yep, I have cut on them and welded on them. I have washed them out with soap and water then just fill them with fresh water or plug up the vacuum cleaner hose to an exhaust pipe and run it into the tank.

Daylight and temps are waning in the mid Atlantic. Took the dogs out for a few hours to enjoy the tail end of color in the Catoctin mtns. Previously had a high pressure bath, got a hand wash today.
Trying to get in one more outing with Wheelie and 47v6 before the end of year. Need to get on the maintenance and mod list spring will be here before you know it.

Na he just wants to go to the Moore expo and wheel at smoore. Or maybe tag along at rush springs ranch... those are my usual season openers but I'm not getting any younger...

Guess it's time for a front lock rite, sm465, 4.27s and some new tires.

Put my dash back on after filling in the radio cut. First time welding, but looks okay from 20 feet away. I'm happy

Well, can't upload the video, file too large, but after a bunch of attempts, and after sitting for 4 years, got the engine to fire up!!!:bananatool::bananatool::bananatool:
Backed it out of the garage under its own power for the first time since I have owned it. Ran it for the required 10 min, 20 min, and 30 min. to burn off the exhaust wrap and paint stink, and then for some reason the electric fan decided to stop working and engine got a bit hot before I shut it down. Only had water in the radiator, so somewhat expected, but now I have to figure out why the fan doesn't want to run (even in manual over-ride!). Also looks like I'm at the end of travel for the HEI distributor, and will need to grind a bit of the engine block away for clearance. Seems like it's always something, but all in all a good day working on the Jeep!!! :D

Oh, and found out just how difficult it's going to be to steer with those big tires, saginaw power steering conversion next on the list.

I've been concerned with a lack of rattling and clanging from my jeep...
So I punched a bunch of 1/2" holes in the bed...

My knuckles hurt a little... But the end justifies the means.

And that's what a latch system would look like for a CJ. Next time the bed is off I'll drop in some square tubing to tie the latch, seatbelts, tailgate hinges, and body mounts together.
The hole pattern is 5.5" ctr to ctr with a start 3.25" off the centerline of the tub. Mine wound up being 1.375" from the back of the tailgate frame for all the plates and washers to set flush.
I would have had them even with the seatbelt mounts but they would be overlapping.
Note: each of those rings is rated at 1000lbs

Somewhere along the way of adding the front fuel tank and putting in a dana 30 front axle, my dauntless started running like sh*t. A while back I had noticed some hesitation when accelerating and popping out the exhaust during deceleration, so I swapped in my other Rochester 2G. But that didn't really help. I just put the problem in the back of my mind. I dialed in the throttle stop screw just to keep it going.

Anyway fast forward to today, the steering is working very well. So I drove around a bit to warm the engine then hooked up the tach, timing light and vacuum gauge. I was idling at 1000 rpm and only pulling about 14" of vacuum.

    I looked around and found
    1) a cracked vacuum hose going to the distributor
    2) I was apparently HUA when I swapped in the carb and forgot to set the idle mixture screws. They were almost completely closed.

So today I got everything dialed in. Now I am pulling 20.5" at 750 idle. It runs a lot better. I tweeked the timing but it didn't need much change, it is a little over 12* BTDC.

So for my next trick I bought the speedometer that was posted on the Boston craigslist ad a couple of weeks ago. Thanks @Framer Mike P for posting the link to the ad.
I paid $50 plus 13 shipping taking a chance that it was a working speedometer.

I received it a few days ago and it looked dirty but unmolested. I pulled off the bezel and cleaned it up. The speedometer I was running came from JC Whitney in the late 1980's. It was made for an intermediate CJ5 so it never really looked right in my '71, but it worked great (and still does for that matter).

Going back to the old style means I am giving up the turn signal indicators, but they were not very helpful anyway being so far out of the line of sight. My original speedometer died with 80k mile showing. The Jc whitney version shows 73k miles. So I have a total of 153k on the jeep. The new-to-me speedometer shows 26k. Oh well Oklahoma doesn't document mileage on vehicles this old anyway.

Here is the JC Whitney speedometer still installed compared to the new-to-me old speedometer I am holding:

And finally the new-to-me old original style installed. The ignition is on to show that the fuel gauge is working perfectly. The fuel gauge was my biggest concern.

You got a great deal on that. When I cleaned mine up, I set it back to 0 miles as that is what it was basically starting
with when it was finished. Looks great.(y)

I have the Transmission out so replaced the Novak adjustable throwout bearing. It is only a couple years old but was making some noise.

Amazingly I installed it in under 2 minutes. I think the previous time it took me 20 minutes. And before that it took 2hours. Getting the retaining clips behind the post and the fork correctly onto the bearing is usually very difficult for me.

That is some good preventative maintenance. Do you have a part number on that?(y)

So depending on your setup it may be different but my TO bearing was almost exactly 1.75” thick front to back. Here’s the part.

Removed my steering linkage, need to do some frame repairs and it'll be easier with this out of the way.

I need to decide if I want to build a new tie rod while it's off....I have a two hole knuckle but I still have the double tie rod end on the passenger side, with nothing hooked to it.
