Herm Brake Master?

Does anyone know what Herm is using for a dual reservoir brake master? I bought one as part of a kit probably close to the beginning of covid. I finally have everything together and am about to take this thing on the road (after about 100 yds of test driving) and the seal where the rod pushes in is leaking badly. It's probably way too late to get a replacement for it and to be honest I don't feel like going through the hassle and waiting to have this turned around.

I probably wouldn't be this whiny but I spent about 30 minutes with the wife bleeding this thing out and we all know how that can go lol. Now I get to do it again.

 

Depends on whether you have drum brakes, disc brakes, or a combination.

 

I had the exact same problem with one I got from him and he had to replace it. Ma have been a bad batch.

 

I've got discs in front and drums in back.

 

I emailed him so we'll see if he at least comes up with some helpful info

 

I believe the master cylinder for a late 70s Ford Fairmont (drums on rear, discs on front) will work.

 

He says his is a special master that he has made overseas and that my pushrod is probably misaligned. If it's the master I'll probably go with a different solution. Just in case. What are other people using? Is there an easy firewall mounted option?

 

I used an all '82 stock-based hanging pedal and firewall arrangement. I have '82 narrow disks in front and big '79 drums on back. It's not easy but uses all factory parts. It requires firewall sheet metal fabrication and heating and bending of factory pedals.
I get so frustrated for those trying to use make-shift arrangements now. HERM is a 4-letter word in my book. I feel for ya!

Bull you have a bad master cylinder.

I don't know, if you're doing swinging pedals, but I know the Chevelle master cylinder is pretty common. If you're converting the stock floor mounted pedals, I used a NAPA P2198 (1974 Ford Econoline E100 with front discs), I had to modify the stock bracket a little but it was an easy swap.

 

Oh, wait, it does occur to me, my CJ is a '70, and already *had* a dual-reservoir MC in it, I swapped, due to adding discs to teh front. I don't know if the bracket is the same, on the older single-reservoir models. Just something to keep in mind, before going and buying what I used.

When you swapped to disks, all you would have needed is to remove the residual valve (little rubber piece, from the master forward circuit.

 

I used my factory 71 dual reservoir to run my front disk brakes and 10" rear drums.

 

There aren’t any easy swinging pedals. But if you’re up to the task it’s a great upgrade.

 

The disk swap was already done by the PO but with a single reservoir master and no proportioning valve. Go figure. I bought the bracket and master from Herm and it was more tedious than difficult to install, it's just a shame he's using some mystery master. I'll take a look at options tomorrow.

 

A couple of options for Master Cylinders have been mentioned, but just about any made for disc front / drum rear will work so long as the fittings are on the right side.

 

Herm, whatever... Whats the bore on the master he sent you? Even money change out the rpv for the discs and put a proportioning valve in the rear this will work fine.

 

Richard at R&P is another option. He sells "the original" conversion bracket and could likely recommend a master cylinder. I believe you should be able to use any factory dual MC with the bracket. Richard likes to use the Wilwood MC with remote reservoirs, I have that setup on my 2a with the R&P bracket. He is pretty responsive by phone, 503-557-8911.

 

Just FYI for everyone, the master cylinder that Rich posted above is not a correct replacement for a stock CJ with dual master cylinder. Rock Auto lists it as such but the fittings are wrong size.

 

It doesn't look like it has the built-in residual valves the original master cylinder has either. As far as I know Crown is the only source for news ones.
