    Dear Members
I have recently come into possession of this jeep.
The history of this jeep, as narrated to me by the previous owner, is that this was one of the many jeeps and station wagons which were sent to India in the 50s/60s as a form of aid from various international agencies including but not limited to the WHO, UNICEF etc. This particular model was issued to the Forest Department of modern day Karnataka in India. The owner brought it from the Forest Deptt in an auction once it was deemed to have no more useful life left to serve in government service.
After having owned it for a few years and made some changes to her, he has now brought himself a Mahindra Bolero and given me this jeep to look after. I am adding just about all the pictures of her that I could imagine would be of interest and also uploading some pictures of her when she was retired from the Forest Department. Those are in white.

A lot of CJ6 Jeeps in India get chopped up to end up with a CJ5 lookalike that commands more money. Ergo, finding an original unmolested hurricane powered CJ6 is a bit rare and if this jeep is indeed an original CJ6, I'd love to restore her to some semblance of originality.

    I am trying to figure out a few things now before I take her to the workshop for work;
    1. Is this a genuine RHD Export model Early CJ6?
    2. What are the parts that need to be corrected on her aside from the obvious.

From my limited understanding; the seats, the speedo, the tailgate are a good place to start.... as for the rest please be gentle with me if I ask too many questions.

P.S. The tyre and the bonnet are looking out of whack as we ended up breaking the hub just before these snaps were taken. Some mounts are also broken hence the bonnet looking out of alignment.

A small request to the moderators, I am sorry if I am out of order with the place or content of the post. I am still reading and searching my way around the forum, especially for RHD export CJ6 jeeps.

    Wishing everyone happy holidays

    John Wayne

    Welcome :)

That seems to be pretty much a stock export model CJ6 with such items such as the lowered wheel boxes to accommodate the rear seats and the right hand steering. Obvious things are the seats & electronic ignition/relays on the firewall. The headlight buckets are not familiar to me & the tailgate is not correct but nothing else jumps out at me.

The LH offset on the rear with the RH offset on the front end is pretty wild.
Is that normal for this jeep?

Agreed. The left hand offset rear axle with what looks like a standard right hand offset Dana 18 is very strange. It appears to be full floating too. Makes me wonder if the rear axle was swapped out at some point.

One other thing- thats a 6 volt starter, it may be swapped or it could have been a 6V jeep when it left the factory.

Its interesting how there are grease cups instead of zerk fittings on the shackles.

@Howard Eisenhauer Thank you for the welcome. All of what you have mentioned, I have noted, thank you. Regarding the various corrections, such as a correct tailgate, I am still trying to figure out what year this jeep is. I had initially thought it was a 1956 model but I guess its an early 1965 model. Not sure though. Till which year were 6 volt systems offered on the CJ6 jeeps?

@52M38-73CJ5 Good catch! completely noticing that!

@Fireball Could very well be. I will try and and share more information once the diffs and axles are opened up for servicing.

@garage gnome I have never seen these grease cups and the mechanic mentioned that some light trucks and Indian Jeep derivatives had these. Definitely not original, and these will be gone the moment the leaf springs go to the workshop.

Gents, if there is anything else that catches your eyes, please do let me know.
For example, I am foxed with that square recess on the passenger side footwell as well as that round hole drilled into the footwell. Any ideas as to what those might be? I think those are after market modifications, but I'd rather ask the experts.

    Regards

    JW

Side hinged tailgate for ease of passenger loading. The one you showed has the vent windshield. Chun Wayne's may have a Mahindra rear axle.

I don't know if the recess is original, but the round hole is for access to the master cylinder on left hand drive models. On my '69:

I believe this CJ6 is not an “export” model, but rather a Willys CJ6 built in India under license for their home market. There are too many differences from our US market versions. Even the pre-‘64 raised mirror boss on the cowl has more height and sharper edges, and the obvious rear wheel opening shape, so not even from the dies that stamped out similar parts from Toledo. The rear axle is more evidence that this Jeep did not originate in the USA, but was built with part sourced in the local market (India).
