In my shop and shed are three intermediate Jeep frames: one whole ‘72, one roller ‘74 with just the tub, and a bare frame purchased from a member here.

The two ‘complete’ Jeeps have body mount brackets riveted and welded at the firewall area, and the tubs have mounts that bolt to them.

The bare frame is stamped with “J4” and the serial number, meaning it’s (likely) a 1974 model, yet it has no brackets, nor evidence that they were ever present. Dimensionally, the three are the same.

Another difference is that the bare frame had two mounting brackets for the transfer case, rather than a full crossmember.

Do I have some odd beast?

The ‘72 and roller frame are rotten and/or cracked & poorly repaired, so I don’t care to use either.

What’s a guy to do? Other than fab up brackets and use the crossmember from one of the others, that is…

    I’ll add some pics tomorrow.

    Jon B.

there are no tub mounting brackets near the firewall on any intermediate Jeep I have ever seen...

I have a NOS 1975 CJ6 frame in the warehouse and the most forward body mount locations would be passenger side under the tool box and symmetrically located on driver side frame rail.

72-74 used a 1 piece crossmemeber to support the drive train
    74-75 used a reinforced 3 piece crossmemeber

    no other option existed..

im saying all this with about 99% certainty.

    Ask, and you shall receive:

The ‘74 in the shed (the ‘72 is the same):

The frame in the shop (S/N stamp has “J5):

Those are the transfer case mounts, but I may have set them on opposite sides from where they were.

The outboard firewall mounts are not present on the ‘75 frame. (I incorrectly referred to it as having a “J4” stamp.)

After some measuring and looking, it appears that the attachment holes for those support brackets are drilled in the ‘new’ frame. Perhaps someone cut off the originals…

Once I cut the bracket off the donor Jeep, I can bolt & weld them on in exactly the right place. Easy peasy!

Jon, sorry I forgot to post a picture of my 74 frame. But I did look closely at it today. mine is exactly like your 72 and 74 frame with a forward body mount just under the firewall. It also has the one piece trans crossmember.
The 75 although being an intermediate saw several changes, an electronic ignition system, new wiring harness, introduction of the "Levi package", factory under dash AM radio option (at least the first one I had seen) and apparently the change of the forward body mount and trans crossmember. The V-8 in 1975 may of been the first to have a catalytic converter. Probably other changes as well.

I went to the shed with an angle grinder & cutoff disc and removed the brackets from the parts donor Jeep.
They’ll get bolted and welded onto the ‘new’ frame before I box in the rails.

I may have to start a build thread on this project, even though it’ll be slow going. At least I have insulation and a furnace in the shop now!

There are two mounts by the firewall, most forward mounts on the tub.

"74 Frame. Mine are welded on with a big rivet of some type too. 8 - are obvious. then there are 4-others mounted on the two cross members.
