I will investigate. Could have happened when trying to remove the cover. Do you think something in this region:

High of 50 tomorrow, but it lives in a cold garage, so it may take some waiting. I could empty and try refilling with 10w30 once I find some.

My current (very unreliable) gut is there is either a blockage or it is just too cold. Then something wobbling with the fan/generator/water pump assembly.

It would be a good idea to drain what you have, including from the oil filter housing so you can start with knowing without a doubt you have the 5 quarts that the engine requires. After you check for blocked passages of course!

I think that's a good course of action. Maybe a silly question, but aside from testing different areas with a pressure gauge, is looking for blocked passages just a visual inspection?

    1. No. It is an audible inspection. You would hear a knocking noise. Have you tried a stethoscope yet?

Seriously, with respect, it is time to stop guessing and using your gut. 64 posts in this thread, and plenty of good advice, but it eventually becomes counter-productive. The process should be to reduce variables and unknowns, not multiply them. Work in a logical progression one step at a time. Do the obvious and simple things first, in a manner to definitively eliminate each one, before you start tearing things apart.

Fair enough. Apologies for the hesitancy--learning a lot and trying not to make things worse.

I had a chance to try the dowel stethoscope today and the sound is certainly coming from here:

So I think the suggestion of the generator bearing is probably correct. It improved some when I loosened the belt.

Oil flow remains unclear. The filter canister leaked again so I played with the torque a bit. I don't yet have a way to pressure test. Leaving things until that's possible.

Well if it IS the generator, removing the belt will stop the noise. And if it does, you may have no oiling issue at all.

"testing different areas with a pressure gauge"

What do you mean by the above statement?

I was meaning looking in different places for a blockage.

I'm picking up a pressure gauge today, but having some trouble getting the sending unit off, it's really down in there.

You can T-the guage below the sender for the dash light or the block where the oil filter is supplied. The square plugs in the middle of the line are buggers to remove and the line to the head is not fed directly. You can T and measure but it will not reflect pump pressure since it is fed by the rear camshaft bearing.

I’ve been trying to remove the sender here.

It’s threaded into an elbow I think and it doesn’t want to budge.

Did you eliminate the generator as the source of the noise?

Yes, identified with the dowel and with the belt off the noise is gone. Now just confirming the oil is working then plan to change for 10w30 and put everything back together.

If you have an adapter you can disconnect the input to the oil filter & connect the gauge to that line, the oil filter is not actually necessary to short term engine operation.

I am not sure what I am looking at in the picture you posted of the "sender". What is that thing with the lever?

The way the oil filter is backing up I am thinking the output fitting or line is clogged. Easy to find out by removing the hose draining the filter and pulling out the filter element. Then blow it out with compressed air.

But a clogged oil filter is not preventing oil from getting to the rocker arm.

Sorry, that was a bad picture from below. I believe is the sender:

But it sounds like there are easier ways to get the gauge reading. Plus as you say if the issue in the filter I may need to focus there.

Thank you! That would be so much easier. The gauge came with lots of adapters so I will try this tomorrow.
