Getting ready to do an efi swap on my 1964 CJ5. Currently has an under seat tank. Anyone have a recommendation for a good replacement? Looking on line I see multiple options but not sure which are good, bad, etc.

Figure if I am going to do a new fuel system and need to plumb the return to the tank it would probably be easier to work with a new tank.

    thanks.

There is a lot of missing information here. What efi system are you looking at? What motor is in it? 1964 would be a 4cyl. There is not a efi ready tank unless you go to a rear tank which is the best long term solution.

I tried to modify my underseat tank with a obround cutout and baffles and fittings but in the end I used a boat fuel filter and extended the threaded nipple the filter spins onto with some tube to draw from the bottom of the filter. then the filter adapter/mount got a vent and return line drilled onto the fuel inlet boss. The inlet from the tank drain used an angle fitting with stainless mesh to pull that last half gallon out and gravity feed the boat filter (since it is now vented to a tee at the filler neck of the tank that also vents the tank) It works but the money could have gone to a bigger rear tank.

It has a Dauntless V6. The efi is a Sniper unit. I have the Sniper external pump kit but ideally I’d prefer to run a gm style in tank pump.

Looking to keep the tank under seat.

Here's the picture of the modified filter / surge tank. Basically the filter media serves as an air/water separator because the tube makes the pump pull from the bottom of the filter and the saturated filter media does not let air through as easily as the fuel. The vent allows air to exit and the tbi returns to the filter so there is not a significant increase in the flow of fuel at the tank outlet. The only modification needed to the tank is a vent at the filler neck. The picture shows mechanical and electric lift pumps but that's for if you have this above the bottom of the tank.

Holly makes a tank and intank fuel pump for the sniper kit but it a rear mount 15 gallon tank. TANKS inc also makes a rear mount efi conversion tank that uses their our intank pump setup

I bought a plastic tank from KW, the filler pipe didn't fit well in my 64 CJ so I sent it back and bought the steel tank, put furring strips under it to raise it up off the steel floor so I could blow out the sand under it. It works out well, but don't fill it all the way up, the cap will leak when the gas in it expands. I put a valve on it drain the gas when I needed some.

I have the Holley in tank pump and have been very happy with it. Late 70s 15 gallon tank with skid plate. It’s an easy weekend modification. Lots of Room under my seat for the tool bag.

Why? Enjoyment of gasoline fumes? The possibility of self immolation? For looks? If the latter is the case, just make a flat plate to fit on the inside of the tub and tack weld the stock filler neck to it. A rear tank is superior in every way, especially so the extra 4 to 5 gallon capacity.

Don't tell this Ralph Nader. I have never heard of an old CJ burning the driver but maybe it was because they couldn't talk? :D
There is just as much chance for a rear tank fire though you would not be sitting on it. It would be a much quicker snuff.
Dual tanks here with electric switchover. Small 11-12 gallon Con-Fer rear tank. Tucks out the way very well.

Where is your fuel outlet on the tank, top or bottom?

I ran that tank as the ONLY tank in my 3B for more than 3 decades before I welded up my own version with twice the capacity. The Con-Fer tank/skid plate is still sitting in the shop and, the gods willing, Fireball's ex Old Blue will inherit it next summer, along with the new electrical switchover valve that is sitting on the work bench.

I've never needed a jerry can since I installed that larger tank. They were always an item with the Con-Fer tank. And as per your post, potential flaming butt syndrome with no Preparation H.

Nope. Hopefully never need one. I do carry a small in line pump for backup.

Very cool! I do hope you get to finish your projects. Looks like a T-10 or a Muncie in the picture. Hotrod days?

That combination was right in there. The engine was a recammed 1970 LT1 350 with even a more aggressive Sig Erson cam. Yes, Muncie M20 and the still present 5.38 gears. The rear axle was a 19 spline full float with a Powr-Lok. At that point it had the 11x2 Bendix brakes and the Corvette Saginaw C3 box (which I'm still using). No problem shredding tires but not ideal for off road. I dumbed that engine down with a Performer cam and the 194 truck heads after which it worked a lot better. But not nearly as well as the 381 that replaced it within a rather short period.

I only aired that combination out once with the 90 mph SW speedometer needle twisted to the back side of the zero pin-up an 8% grade.

I just did a sniper and put the pump in an underseat tank. Cj3b with an f-head. The pump noise is very annoying when you pull up to a stop light. Should have just mounted a pump on the frame. I believe on an old Jeep that an under seat tank is actually safer than in the back. In a crash, a rear tank is far more likely to be damaged in an old jeep. Thirty five years in the fire service. So I have seen a few crashes.

I agree about the rear tank. I was rear ended last summer and the tank was damaged and was leaking.
