To my knowledge, there were NO factory hard tops. Jeep approved hard tops, yes. Usually dealer installed. As for the diff cover, you will not likely be distorting the fastening surface beating that out. Another option for a cover would be to luck into one of the early MB/GPW cast covers. Pretty much indestructible but may be a bit pricey. That said, no more pricey than the cast or built-up aftermarket versions.

It get's a bit tricky with the definition of "Factory"

Some units, at least some CJ5's, did leave the factory with a hardtop installed, it was a Kelly and pretty much, but not quite, the same unit that was supplied to dealers as "JEEP Approved Equipment" or directly from Kelly themselves. It's in the parts manual.

Were they "built" by Jeep? No, but neither were the factory installed transmission, transfer case, axles, generator, distributor, speedometer, PTO equipment etc.

There was an ad image posted in the Tops thread that said only available from factory, and I think mine was one of those.

if there is a document somewhere about my top, would be interesting to get since some where down the road I’ll need to have some things redone on it

Get one of the parts manual reprints, I beleive the '64 up has the diagrams. The '72 PDF/CD you see advertised does not though.

If the top was only available through the factory then calling it a factory top is certainly reasonable.

The main difference was the sliding doors- factory installed tops had'em, the other Kelly sales literature shows swing doors but the sliders may have been an option.

FY'sI It's been noted before that the jeeps with the "factory" tops seem to have had the dash welded onto the tub. Not sure why as the Kelly aftermarket tops fit fine with the bolted dash. :?

Sliding doors were only factory installed because there was some welding and such for the track, I beleave we determined it is no relationship to welded dash. I think they just didn't punch the holes on a run and made due or something.

My jeep had a swinging door Kelly hardtop and welded dash when I got it but under the paint was a half cab paint line and the kelly hardtop was origuonally blue and my jeep was green.

My '66 Tux came from the dealer with the Meyers hardtop, AFAIK, and the dash in NOT welded in. I was told by the grandson of the original owner that it was ordered with the HT and plow.

I know the welded dash CJs of the early ‘60s have been discussed before, but of the 7 or 8 that I have been around with that feature have all had a “factory” installed hard top. These tops are the ones seen in mikvar’s post #2063 above.
One member up in Miami, I think, has the only exception. His CJ is topless, but it may have been removed decades ago.

Here’s a question, my 63 CJ5 has a chrome steering column. Were those factory? I’ve only ever seen black. Mine is highly optioned, has Koenig top and pto winch, over drive, dual tank etc. Just curious.

How would a welded dash be identified? Be happy to look at mine to see.

This is a welded dash, note that it is smooth and flat with just a weld on the bottom corner...
No paint under the dash at all if it pops loose. There are unused holes in the tub for the bolts.
Mine had the hinged door hard top.

And this is the more common bolt-in dash. Makes it much easier to work on your wiring:

    Garage clean out.
Three items to ID before I chuck them out.

    1. This clutch fork has an odd asymmetrical shape to the cable end. Maybe from an F-head T86?

    2. Transfer Case mount? From what?

    3. I DON’T KNOW.

The last picture looks like half of a motor mount horn. Is this 3b stuff?
