Leaking seal Dana 18 Tranfer @ Emer Brake

I want to replace the rear seal on my Dana 18 Transfer Case behind the Emergency Brake Drum. It is dripping some and gets oil on the lining. Is this a easy seal to replace? Can I just get it at say Napa Auto Parts does anyone have a Seal Number for it?? Haven't pulled the drum off yet to look because I would like to complete the job when I do. Thanks found the Seal Number (#473229) In reading most of the posts it looks like the seal is on the inside not just seated into the back of the hole for the Yoke? Guess I will have to pull the drum and look for myself to make it clear to me how to replace it. I sure don't want to tear my Transfer Case apart for this little leak if that is needed since leaks here is common even after replacing the seal from what I read. I will buy the seal anyway and hang onto it just in case it not that bad of a job to do. Mark

 

Leaking oil out the back of a D18? Wow, that's a surprise.

Could be the seal - there are several seals that fit, easy to find one.
Could it be leaking out the splines where the yoke fits on the the shaft? If so I think you would need to really clean them up with brakleen before applying some sealant.

Another area is between the shims but I'm thinking that wouldn't be leaking into your brake.

Just rebuilt mine & I think I got these areas to not leak. Now it's leaking out at the speedo cable. But it doesn't bother me, no, not at all. That oil spot on the garage floor. And on the concrete pad in front of the garage. Doesn't bother me at all. And the oil spot on the pavement at work. I hardly notice it. Oil dripping down the side of the nice newly rebuilt t-case. And down the back. All over the cross member. No, it doesn't bother me one bit. . . .

 

I rbuilt my transfercase a couple of times and did all that fun stuff to try and stop the leaking...but finally gave up on it. Now my jeep is parked over cardboard or out on the street.....I just love oil drips tooo...

 

I just replaced mine a couple of weeks ago. Went very easy. I was a little concerned about having to get into the TC but you don't have to go very far just for the seal. Just pay attention to how the old one was in and tap in the new one the same way. I used a very large socket , just alittle smaller than the seal to tap ii in. NO Leaks!! Well a little one from the motor.

 

I just did mine but it's on the floor. I took the e-brake back plate & casting off to punch it through. The seal fit so thight and I couldn't find anything to fit the O.D. snug. Anything less than the size of the OD would bend it. I got lucky, a wooden mallet I had fit it perfectly. It was a tight fit. I would polish the tail shaft before I put it back. I had so much dried up snot and grass inside of the e-brake you'll have to pull the drum and clean everything anyway. Put new shoes on also. Drum was in great shape and came off with a little tapping. Everything was well preserved.

 

Jeeps do not leak! The Jeep is merely "Marking" his territory.

 

Thanks I guess I will pick up the Seal now and put it in. Concerned that with a leak I might end up with low fluid and cause a problem with my new Overdrive I just put in!! Mark

 

Forgot to mention, I bought the gasket/seal kit from Walck's for about $17. I think. Karl at Walck's is alway a great help with any questions. One of those guys that knows the parts you need off the top of his head.........and doesn't waste words explaining things
