I just bought a 72 CJ5 with a 304 v8. I've done a few upgrades but am planning on doing more. The 3spd tranny will not stay in reverse unless I hold the shift lever. How do I find out what transmission I have? So I can find out availability of parts. Also how do I find out what axles I have?

    If it is a stock 304 it should be a T-15. If it was a stock 258 originally it's a T-14.

Stock axles should be a D30 front and a D44 rear.
As MA said above, if the 304 is original, the tranny should be a T15. The tcase is a Dana 20.

I dont know if it would be useful to you or not but I have a t15 extra that I would sell, but shipping might be on the high side and you would have to swap the input shafts as mine has the 6cyl shaft in it currently but thats not hard to do (one is longer than the other)

it was in a parts Jeep 74 I got and was wrecked way back in 79, OD read 49,000, parts in it dont look worn at all but im no expert on them. 70 plus ship

I too have a T15 I just pulled from a '75 w/ 304. Nothing wrong with it as I am swapping in a T-18a. It should bolt right up with no mods. Bellhousing and clutch fork can go with it.

Let me know if you're interested.

I have a 72 CJ5 with a 304 and used to have the 3 speed it was a T-15, I however swapped in a Ford T-18 and a Hydraulic clutch. used a bell housing from a T-176 and a AA adapter for the Dana 20
