I installed Advance Adapter headers in '98 when I did my P/S conversion. No problems to date with leakage, rusting out, etc... A bit pricey, but worth it IMHO. HTH!

Well I won't be going off the road. I will be keeping the frame, and the 225. I'll check on the Hedmans.. I want the header to stay inside the frame.. Some of them go outside the frame, and you have to cut to much of the metal out of it. Then I am going to run duals. I know that I wouldn't have to run a cat. because of the year, but if I run Flowmaster cats. it won't matter. I will then run the pipe to two Spin Tech mufflers. ALP

They look ok, but I have a 225.. Will they still fit?? I won't be buying anything untill I get the truck. When it does come.. Is there any way to find out just what I have including the year?? It has duals on it now, and I am going to keep them. Everything looks pretty rusty under there. It may just be surface rust though from sitting. Do you know of a chart that shows layout of the exhaust system for the CJ?? Thanks.. ALP

    Ignore Summit's 3.8L comment. :D

    McRuff won't steer you wrong.

Regarding finding the year. If you have the number off the frame or the engine number we can help narrow it down reasonably.

The 225 and the 231 are basically the same motor. The 231 came from the 225, it is a .050 bigger bore.

As of now I have no idea how many miles are on the engine.. How hard are they to rebuild??, and what kind of horse power is in the stock engine?? How are they on gas?? Also what is Dauntless?? I thought that it was a Buick, or a 60's GM engine?? ALP

No one makes anything for the 225 but fenderwell headers to my knowledge. Theres basically not enough room in the jeep frame for anything but block huggers and fenderwell headers. Advance I think makes block huggers but I'm not sure. 4wd hardware also has Hedman headers for the 225 there part# is 69420B, these are ball style collectors which keeps them from leaking around the collector.

A stock 225 is rated at 160 gross, about 130 net. They are very torquey motors due to the flywheel and engine characteristics. They are easy to rebuild, yes the Dauntless 225 is truly a Buick motor. The rights to the engine were sold to kaiser in 1966, they owned the rights and manufactured the engines until 1971, AMC sold the rights back ot GM who bored them out .050" to 231 and then started using them again in 1975, the engine was changed a fair amount over the years but the basic design is still there, there just evenfire motors now instead of oddfire. There is a link in our technical section that will explain what that is, it has nothing to do with the firing order, you should read it, it will explain alot about these engines and why they are so loved by vintage jeepers. They are good on gas just not in a jeep with the aerodynamics of a brick.

I am not sure I could runfenderwell headers.. The fenders now are 37, not Jeep.. I want to have the truck sit like they did in the late 60's- early 70's.. 15" wheels in the back 14" in the front. I guess i could also go 16,15. Does the fenderwell headers interfer with the tires at all?? This may also make a difference seeing that the front axle that is now Jeep, will be replaced with a 40 Ford beam axle.. One spring runs across the axle and ataches to the frame using a 40 Ford cross member. It will have the rear end that came from Jeep though.. I am not sure what that is either.. ALP

The headers are a good 10" from the tires. The factory rear axle for a cj 5 or cj6 is a dana 44.

How are the 44's?? Are they as good as the 60's?? I have heard of Dana 60's for years.. Never heard of a 44 untill I came here.. What gearing would I expect to find?? Would that be a posi unit?? I will also be using an automatic in sted of the 3-speed that is in there. This after all will be a Street Rod, and not a Trail Truck.. ALP

The dana 44 is standard equipment for a 1/2 pickup. They have been around for more than 50 years. Tried and true. If you have a late 70 or 71 model you more than likely have a flanged 1 piece axle which is the best. There should be no grease caps in the middle of the axle where the wheel goes. The dana axles start as follows; 25,27,28,30,35,41,44,50,60,70,80. There are a few oddballs in the middle but not really worth mentioning. There could be a power loc or trac loc in the axle. If the thing came in the jeep with a v6 the axles should be 3.73 or 4.88's, the 4 cylinder models came with 4.27 or 5.38's.

No, they told me in a email tonight that it is a 67, or 68.. I am still trying to figure jsut how long this truck could be.. The original 37 Ford pickup is on a 112" wheel base. The Jeep cj5 is on an 81". I know the truck is going to be longer than the Jeep, but does anyone off hand know how long your jeep is from bumper to bumper?? I just need to know how much room I am going to have in the garage. The garage is over 70 years old. It has a wooden plank floor.. Rather cool in the winter.. There is no heat in the garage.. Thanks.. ALP
