Hi. Can anyone tell me how wide the frame is on say a 67 cj5 at the front cross member?? I need to know if I can put in a 40 Ford cross member.. I know what the cross member measures.. Thanks.. ALP

It should be between 29-30" wide.

Darn.. I guess that won't work. The cross member is only 27 5/8" across..

Another question then.. If I just hank the drive shaft off the front.. That should reduce the drag on the engine.. Shouldn't it?? I am going to pull out the high low in it..

Should be no drag when not engaged in 4wd. The biggest savings you'd have going to 2wd is the weight of the transfer case, and (if you replaced the front axle with a straight version) the pumpkin.

Well I am going to pull the 3-speed, and the transfer case any how.. It does a number on the floor inside the cab. What holds the axle in now?? Is that a double leaf spring??

Yes, the front axle is placed by the leaf springs.

What you gonna do for a transmission?

Just talked with a guy on ebay. His cross member for a 39 Ford is 27 1/2" long. Now I would still need to know what the inside width of the frame is where I would be placing the crossmember. Anyone know where I could find the exact measurements to an early cj frame??

IMHO I wouldn't do much of anything until I was looking at the truck in person.

True, but I want to run smoothies on the truck, and I can't with that big lockout on it..

I'm just saying - you're getting a vehicle that's been heavily modified. Trying to figure out measurements of stuff until you have it on hand seems premature - you just dont know exactly what's been done to it.

I'll wait. I got the measurements on the truck today. The truck is: 165" long, 77" wide, and 72" High. How does that compare to the overall of a cj??

Oh, and the frame there hasn't been changed. In the pictures they are using the 225 on the original motor mounts, and the Jeep radiator. I was also told that the only thing that is different on the cj frame is that a pair of 4x4's ( that's wood) were used to hel hold the box on.

A cj5 is like 121" long total, and 59" wide. The truck almost has to be on a cj6 frame. The early cj5 only has an 81" wheelbase. The cj6 is 20" longer.

I think all cj's frames from 1948 thru 1971 are 29 1/4 inches wide, outside to outside of the rails.

Thanks.. Do you know of anywhere where I can see the frame, and frame specs for a 60's cj??

Thanks.. That helped. The frame is boxed I think, at least it looks that way. It is 29 1/4 front, rear. Is that from the outside of the frame to the outside of the frame. That would be great if that is how it measures.. ALP
