removing pilot bushing...

    I'm replacing the clutch in my '57 CJ5. I've got the pressure plate, friction plate and flywheel off the motor. How do I remove and replace the pilot bushing?

    I used a 1/2" bolt about 4" long & a large (larger than the bearing :twisted: ) 1/2" drive socket. Run the bolt through the bushing, slip the socket over the bolt & put a nut on the bolt. Start tightening the nut & the bolt will pull the beariing into the socket.:)

    Be aware that after you install the new bearing the center hole has to be reamed to the right diameter, it closes up a bit when the bearing gets pressed into the flywheel.:(

    Do a search on "pilot bushing" and you'll find tons of stuff. I just glanced and saw several removal methods.

    i used the toilet paper method. works just fine. take a bolt or rod that will fit in the old pilot bushing. wet toilet paper and pack the old pilot bushing. hammer in the bolt. You will probably have to add a bit more paper after each time you pound the bolt in, but it will come out.

    Never heard of the TP method! I've heard of doing it with grease, though. Get a solid round rod or shaft that fits snugly in the bushing. Pack the bushing and hole full of heavy grease, then insert the rod and whack it a few times gently with a hammer to use the grease to push the bushing out hydraulically.

    X2 on the grease method works great,but like the TP method less messy have to give that one try next time.

    yup, definately less messy. and with the leftover wet toilet paper you can throw it on the ceiling or at your wife ;)

    Both the TP & grease methods sound interesting but I don't think they're gonna work in this case :(.

    Tho OP has a F4 which has the pilot bushing mounted in the flywheel- not the crank. As he's stated that the flywheel is already off I would suspect no matter how much grease/soggyTP/ Jello pudding etc. you stuff in the hole its just gonna fall out the back side & make a mess :(.

    What will happen when he sticks a bar in the hole & whacks it I'll leave up to your imaginations, I just hope theres nothing breakable in the line of fire :twisted:

    Looking at the wheel it looks like you can just get a socket and smack it out. make sure the hole is not tapered so you damaged the flywheel. But it looks pretty easy to knock out

    yup just find a socket that fits it nicely and whack away. Im fairly sure they arnt tapered so it shouldnt matter which way you wack it out.

    I've got a shop press. You think that would work to "press" it out and put a new one it? Do I need to grease the outside of the new bushing before installing it?

    Isn't the bushing usually in the end of the crank on most motors?
