I decided to install the clutch and pressure plate last night and came to the realiztion that I am not sure which side of the clutch disc goes where. I did some searching and found and earlier post in the EarlyCJ5 section that describes my question. Just for clarification if I follow the diagram below and install the disc with the flat surface towards the pressure plate and the raised area towards the flywheel the disc doesn't sit flat against the flywheel. There is a 1/8" or more space between the disc and the flywheel. Which way does the disc go?

Must go the other way then. I don't remember exactly what it looks like but the raised section probably fits inside the pressure plate ring.:v6:

So the disc sits flat against the flywheel and the raised part of the disc goes in the pressure plate?

disc should sit flat against both the flywheel and the pressure plate. If it don't you've got the wrong clutch.:v6:

Every CJ clutch I ever changed had "This side toward flywheel" stamped into the collar. If your new one dosen't, look at the old one and see which side it is stamped on it. Should be the same.

The protruding spring set facing you in the picture goes inside the PP. This allows the backside of the clutch plate to mesh with the flywheel. If it were reversed the spring set would hit the flywheel BEFORE the disk.

Just like they've said - raised portion goes inside the PP.

I put it in backwards one time. Man that's a lot of work to do twice, especially with cast iron trans and transfer cases. Saw the writing when I took it back out. I was only about 18 at the time.

I put one in backwards in a '65 Chevy van. First clutch I ever did. It's one lesson you really only need to learn once.

Dang, wish it looked that easy when I installed a new clutch in my jeep. I had to get under it and lift all that up in place. R)
