Will fire up if primed but no fuel is pumping into Carb

    I havent started my Jeep up for a few months and just got around to it now because I am moving. Anyway, like I said if I dump a little bit of gas into the intake it will fire up fine and run until I stop giving it gas manually. I looked at the fuel pump and had a steady drip at the bottom of it. So fuel is getting to the pump. I tightend up the fuel line and the leak stopped but still no gas at the carb. I'm not much of a mechanic so I was wondering your suggestions on next step to take to troubleshoot. Thanks.

    Pull the fuel line coming out of the pump and put it in a jar and make sure it is pumping fuel.

    Check the oil. See if there's gas in it. Pull the dipstick and smell it.

    If so it's a bad fuel pump. I'd start with that.

    If you're still having problems I'll be in town next week and could lend a hand most likely. :)

    X2. Sounds like a bad fuel pump, and it's an easy thing to check. Just keep in mind when doing this, like the story I have told before on here, if you accidentally spray gas all over the engine compartment while doing this (which by the way means the pump is good) and you decide to pull the carb off, dont set the carb down between the two battery posts.:oops: It kinda makes a mess of things.

    I'm not sure whether I was electricuted, or just burned by the fire that it caused, but it hurt either way.:(

    Could be the float is sticking, holding the needle in the closed position so no gas is getting in, or even varnish in the inlet plugging it. If you get gas out of the pump, this would be your next place to check.:coffee: :)

    Did ya figure anything out on this? I've had the fuel disappear from my float bowl before. Just poured in a little gas into the float bowl and everything was fine until it happened again after a few hours or days or weeks. Then the problem went away for good. I still don't know what it was but I suspect the needle valve was sticking. If you're not familiar with the float and needle valve system just pull the top off your carb and it will become obvious.

    If it was running when you parked it, it's probably just the needle valve in the carb stuck. Tap the carb in the float bowl area with a hammer a few times to try to un-stick it.

    I'll tell you guys how things go after Christmas when I get a chance to check it out this weekend. It was running fine when I parked it and it was getting fuel from the tank up to the pump when I was messing with it last weekend. Thanks for the advice.

    I suspect Southtowns is right.

    Tap on the passenger side of the float bowl.

    Again, if you need help, I'll be in Ft. Branch mid-week next week. :)

    Tap with the head of the hammer in your hand.. use the handle to do any tappin on the carb. and not too hard.

    carbs tend to be really brittle if struck with metal objects. the wooden handle is perfect, or maybe a light weight rubber headed mallet.:coffee: :hurrican:

    Alright, pulled the line off , cranked it, and about a 2 or 3 inch stream out of the top of the pump. Tapped on the carb some and now I'm getting gas to the carb. Wouldnt fire this time though because I think I flooded it. Left it alone because it was getting dark and cold. I'll update you next time I get out to it.

    If tapping fixes it.
    It will still be gummed up inside and suseptable to doing it again.
    At the least put some carb. cleaner in your tank.
    This will disolve some of the varnish.
    If you want to be sure then do a carb. rebuild which should fix it for years.:)

    I had the same problem only it turned out to be the flex line going to the pump had collapsed-not letting fuel get to the pump.

    Good deal Tyler!!! (as I sit in a Starbucks in Evansville typing this :D )

    Good advice on the carb cleaner. Make sure you clean the gum outta there.
