Greasing Locking Hubs

    Strider380 Can I have a zip tie?

    Can I use wheel bearing grease in my locking hubs? I read on one web site not too. Or do I use the multi purpose grease that you would use for front ends?

    And I've been using wd40 to clean the old grease out. Any reasons why I shouldn't be?

    CJ4U Aint broke, ur not trying

    Not that I'm going to be correct on this:rofl:, but I use engine degreaser, dry everthing out really good, then use the high temp disk brake grease. I've been told to use that (high temp disk brake grease) because the spindles can get pretty warm some times.

    For the body assembly overhaul, the FSM says to clean and inspect all parts and coat lightly with chassis lube...lube friction shoes liberally with chassis lube before installation.

    For the clutch assembly overhaul (Automatic Hubs), ...clean and inspect...replace u-ring and o-ring on dial...lube clutch cap[With what? I Dunno.]...install dial assembly...lube o-ring and inside of cap.

    Grinsha minimally sufficient

    I just clean mine and put a little engine oil on them. If your spindles are getting warm you probably need to repack the wheel bearings.

    dont see any reason wheelbearing grease would hurt anything it is a better grade of grease,unless it is too thick <heavy>, i am assuming these hubs you are speaking of are the warn m3b lockamatic like came on jeeps in the early 1970,s i used wheelbearing grease in mine no problems yet :roll

    I use white lithium grease in mine.

    From: http://www.aa1car.com/library/2004/bf60414.htm

    Inspect the condition of the splines inside the hub as well as those on the axle, also the drag sleeve and locking hub bearings. Clean and lightly coat with the recommended type of lubricant (ATF, wheel bearing grease, multipurpose grease, white lithium, etc.). Do not pack the locking hub full of grease.


    Looks like any of the above are proper long as there's not too much.
