In the process of installing Herms OD and have run into a snag. I'm installing the planetary unit onto the splined shaft ( 6 ) and I rotate it until it feels lined up. Problem is it only wants to slide on 1/4" or so. Thought I read about using a rubber mallet but wanted to check first. Any experienced opinions available ?? Many thanks in advance. Jeff.

Yup - I use a med bearing hammer to tap them in all the time. Don't go to hard and move around to keep it even. Tight tollerance for them.

Trans in neutral, tcase in gear, rotate the tcase output while you push on the gear set?

Did you lube the splines first? Brush some gear oil on the gear faces that will be matching up as you install it?

I've not installed one of Herm's OD's (yet!) but I've done lots of work putting helical gear sets together in the past.

If these things don't help, someone else will be along soon I'm sure.

EDIT: There ya go. Warloch knows what he's talking about. :D

Just wanted to pipe in here, I had the same problem with an Overdrive that I tried to install before I finally had Herm rebuild it. I'm no expert so I called Herm and he expressly warned me in no uncertian terms NOT to try tapping it in with a hammer. Check with Herm, but as I recall, he explained that during use some of the tight tolerances can have the metal actually expand causing problems putting things back together. When Herm rebuilds the OD's, he machines a slight taper onto the leading edge of whatever piece slides into the T/C. My rebuilt unit had no problems going together. I guess I'd just advise to check with Herm before using any force. OD's are expensive. Just my opinion. Good luck!
