I'm leaking gear oil (I think) our of somewhere but I haven't figured it out yet. My question is, how worried should I be? It's not coming out gushing (doesn't leave a oil stain on the driveway, it just drips onto my skid plate) but the t-case and transmission are wet. Where are some common leak points to check?

Also, I need to top these things off. Currently, my transmission protests being shifted the first time right after you start it up (mostly into reverse). The gears will bounce around a little till it pops in. Is this just because reverse isn't synchro-meshed?

I THINK I have a T-18, not too sure. The PO put it in.

I'd be more worried if they were dry. Output shaft seals are the usual suspects.

Take a pic of that trans and I'm sure somone could help ID it for you. Pretty common swap.

Slight leaks are common in older Jeeps, even after my last rebuild the T18 was leaking. I suppose a little more attention to detail on my part might have helped, but what the hey....

Again common for the T18. If I am not completely stopped the gears will grind a little, and even when stopped 1st and rev do tend to bump just a little.

When I announced at my local "old Jeeps parts dealer" that I was attempting to build a leak-free Jeep, I got one heck of a hearty laugh out of them. When they finally could talk, all that was said was, "Son, Jeeps leak. Period."

If it's not leaking enough to cause a drip, I wouldn't worry about it.

Well, I just got 2 quarts of gear oil so I'll just top it off and see.

I think Jeep leaks were engineered to help keep stuff from rustin'. Didn't work all that well, but oh well.
