I started the jeep up this mornig and went back inside for a few minutes. When I came out I noticed coolant running out from underneath the jeep. I opened up the hood and saw coolant coming from the water pump. I have the water pump off now and am wondering where I go from here. I noticed there was no gasket between the pump and the engine block. Is this a "replace the whole thing" kinda repair or "take it apart and rebuild it" kind of repair. Another question is how smoothly should the pulley/spindle/impeller rotate in the pump, this one seems to be binding quite a bit.

It should rotate freely. Simplest would be to buy a new or rebuilt one, but I think there are kits available to rebuild them.

gasket schmasket. :) Just use some blue rtv and you're good to go. don't use too much, or the excess will block the ports in and out of the block and restrict the flow.

I just got a rebuilt water pump with gasket from NAPA for about $25. Really easy installation. A little tip: the torque on the bolts is about 90 inch/lbs, not 90 ft/lbs. Two broken bolts in the blocks turned an easy install into a days worth of pulling the water pump, timing chain cover, distributor, etc.
