I like it, but I seem to be a lonely ford man around here??? The tranny is fairly short, but like any auto conv. it makes the rear shaft short and if you have a sus. lift more than 1.5 - 2.5" it makes a CV joint a necessity, at least in a 5! Lots of parts avail., Go for it!!! I'm doin' a 302 (331), T-19, m18 w/O.D. as we speak! But it's a stretch job (time and a little W.B.)

right now she sits on a 2" pro comp set of springs, front shackle reversal, longer rear shackles ( makes it sit level) , RS5000's front and rear,35 x 12.50 x 15 radial Baja claws ( they actually measure 33" with about 28 lbs of air), on plain old black 15 x 10 black steelies.
What are your thoughts on engine placement, driveshaft length issues, etc. ?

Also, what are your thoughts on gear ratios, It's stock 3.73 right now, but I
pretty much play in the river bottoms anyway, just looking for any and all feedback.

With the auto you'll get torque mult. with the converter, approx. 2:1 (1st gear, 2.46 = 4.92) the transfer is 2:1 so then you have 9.84 x 3.73 = 36.7, ehh....not TO bad!
I would keep the engine as far foward as possible, you will have to change your oil pan, I used an early bronco pan and pickup (or rear sump). You can get a short water pump through Ford Racing, you may want to move the engine over to the drivers side a little for front driveshaft clearance. Also see Novaks site for tips (they've been doin' this for a while, good stuff).
You don't have a big lift, but that rear drive shaft will be short. look at a CV joint!

Let me add to that, for running sand and/or mud your gears are marginal, any trail running and you better have good brakes, you'll be riding them a lot! I think you should look for a 35 - 40: 1 ratio without taking the torque converter into slip mode.

You can get lower gears for everything with gears in the jeep: the auto - 2.84 1st, transfer - 3.15, 3.27, 3.73 or 4. : 1 ratios, and your axles 4.11, 4.56, 4.88 or 5.38 (these are what I am use to, I am sure I am wrong on some and forgetting others, but that's the homework you'll have to do!!!). Tire size, street use, hiway speed, cost and install cost, down time....all that jazz...adds up quick, but it's kind of fun....ISN"T IT?????

I would like to see pics of those motor/trans/TC combos. Always seemed interesting to me.

Im in the process of installing a Ford 5.0 EFI (302) from an '86 Crown Vic into my 80 CJ-5. I found that the Crown Vic already had the rear sump oil pan, so check around the scrapyards & see what you can find. I used MORE BombProof motor mounts, they were 210$$, but the ease of installation made it worth the cost. The only problem I have encountered is the exhaust being too close to the brake lines & proportioning block (which I moved rearward 6 inches) and having to engineer a clutch linkage, which you wont have to deal with. I'm interested in what exhaust you will be using,,, might help me solve a problem or two. You will definitely want to look into a CV shaft for the rear, and in my case there seems to be plenty of room between the radiator & front of the engine, so if you mounted an electric pusher fan in front of the radiator you can move the engine mounts forward by 4 or 5 inches, helping your rear driveline angle. Good luck & let us know how it turns out. I m currently re-wiring it so the electronics & computer will work and plumbing in the fuel supply & return lines.

I swapped a 360ci motor in place of my f-head in my '59 cj5. It was a blast to drive but it had way to much power for me. I recently swapped i 225 and the limited amount i've driven it i like it better. You will definetly learn how to "redrive" your jeep with a v-8. I'll be curious to hear your impressions on it after you've driven it.

Dale, you are not the only Ford nut here. I qualify as well.
I am going to be watching this thread as well. I have a 70 CJ5 with a Dauntless v6 in it but a I am helping a friend swap a 351w into a 90 Mustang. He is giving me the 5.0 out of the Mustang and that has really gotten me to thinking. lol
I can get all of the electronics, sensors and computor with it as well.
I had a 53 M38A1 years ago that had a 289 in it and I sure loved that thing.

O.K. maybe I was a off on my "only ford man",I have read in other threads.... we're here!

The exhaust I use are 289 hy-po cast iron and exit to the outside of the frame as tight to the floor as possible (I don't like it there and have been lucky not to have scraped them off!) I'm planning to run the new one(s) inside the frame to the rear.

My body is a CJ2A, on a '57 5 frame, as for rad.- fan clearance, I cut the org. shroud off and moved the rad. to within 1/4" of it, I'm using an M38 rad.(4 core) mod. to the ford in/outlets. I used an alu. flex fan and made a custom spacer, IT IS TIGHT!!! That's why I'm going with the short water pump.

My tranny is the T&C 10 bolt top loader, but I'm switching to a T-19. I also have an AA C-4 adapter set up for my next adventure (300 six w/ said adap. into a '53 Jeep wagon, 44 front and 9" rear, but this is realistically years off!)
Anyway, to make a short story long, the length of the bell/tranny combo is: 10 bolt - about 16 3/4", T-19 - 19 1/2" and C-4 - 23" and that is block to transfer case.

I would like to post pics. but my comphuzer skills aren't quite there YET, But I'm a workin' on et!
