What color should the dash mounted hooks be that the windshield hold-downs attach to? (just the part that bolts to the dash)

on my 70, which had never been repainted AFAIK just parts of it primed, the hold down hooks are a zinc phosphate color, just like the windshield clamps. kind of a rough zinc finish.

Soo...what would one do to restore some that had been painted?

dohc281 It is what it is.

Remove the paint and try to polish/buff the finish?

    nickmil In mothballs.

I tried buffing some and it removed the coating. I may have been a little "agressive" with the buffer though:rofl: . If restoring, strip and send 'em out and have re-galvanized/coated. I know it's not resto but I had mine powdercoated black and think they came out darn nice. Sorry but don't have a pic handy. Nickmil

Hmm...might have to try that. I've painted up latches before but so much of the paint always comes off when you latch the w/s that they never look good for long.

If you have a bunch of stuff to do you can get a zinc electro-plating kit from Eastwood for around $65. I have seen some parts done that way and they look real good.

i tried the link on the first page and it said it didnt work. i was wondering what the latches looked like on a 73. the po removed what ever latches there were and put in a piece of metal. does any one know where you can get the correct ones, or if the ones that are sold for the 50's jeeps will work?

Mine are chrome too. Not original to the JEEP, but they were sold by DeBellas as original/NOS parts.

Check out de-sta-co.com if you want something better than stock but not original at all.

I intend to send out my clamps and other dash hardware for zinc replating because I'm aiming more for restoration. Haven't looked for vendor yet so can't help there.
