what would make my clutch hard to mash? i have been through 3 different pressure plates. the flat diaphram jeep style and two GM style plates with the raised diaphram. the flat just didnt work at all, never would engauge right, and both GM styles are so hard to push. i have tryed adjusting the clutch and have tried two size (length) release bearings, one shorter then the other. is this normal for a cable style linkage to be so hard to push? its getting to be kind of a pain pulling the trans & tcase and costly buying pplates also. Any help is appreciated. thanks

Is your linkage well lubed, in good shape?

if so, it may be roller-chain linkage time?

    no
I can reach in with my hand and depress my clutch pedal all the way to the floor.
sure your cable is good ? not full of dirt or been melted by exhaust pipe ?

If you don't have a spare cable, I'd replace the cable and keep the original as a trail spare. The '72s came with a cable that would seize up, and Jeep would replace the whole shebang under warranty with a bellcrank from a '73. I hear the earlier cables are kinda ok... lots of lube will help.

Easy test - take the cable off and see how easily it slides through the sheath.

I have the A/A roller and chain set-up It works but i'm not that pleased with it. I am looking into a hydraulic set-up. As mentioned above try checking the cable. I would think if your cable was working ok it would be better than the bellcrank style. Seems to me with extra play in the cable, body and frame flex would'nt effect it much.

Frame flex does not affect the cable model from a 71 model v6 at all. The clutch cable should slip thru the casing really easy. If you lube it do it very very sparingly as the lube will only attract dirt and grit that wheres the cable out.

Do you possibly have the clevis hooked to the wrong hole in the pedal arm?

so I don't lead you wrong...
my clutch is just the stock factory diaphram type
I suppose a HD aftermarket p/plate would be much stiffer

Well i heard that two types of plates will work, when i got the JEEP years ago and started the resto. it had a GM style Pplate so thats what i went back with. tried the regular diaphram jeep style and it didnt engauge right so i went back to the GM style. Its a regular GM plate and nothing heavy duty. I have the clevis hooked in the bottem hole on the pedal arm and the return spring in the hole above. Is this correct?

Something else to consider is the length of the clutch fork. I know of at least 3 different lengths. The longer one will give you more leveralge and make working the clutch easier.

Measure the length from the pivot ball to the hole where your arm hooks. Clint posted a pic on his clutch issue a couple weeks ago.
