What methods have you folks used to get the D20 t-case drive gear retaining nut off the output shaft of the transmission. The transmission is sitting on the bench and to my mind the transfer shock of an impact tool seems to put that out of the question but I have no way that I can figure out of holding either the input shaft or the output shaft securely without damaging them. I'll bet someone is going to tell me to used the old clutch on the input shaft cause they know I threw that away already. KSA

Remove the shifter top and lock it in two gears at once. That will keep everything from turning except the whole transmissionR). The shock of the impact to remove the nut should not be anything worse than driveline shock from letting the clutch out fast.......If it breaks from the impact it was going to break very soon anyway.........

I'mf you've got a real good impact gun you should just be able to hold it with your hand and gun it off. That's how i did mine.

Re: Transfer case drive gear removal (reinstall)

Now I'm going to put everything back together it probably wouldn't be prudent to reuse the original locknut right? (it looks like a pipe wrench was used on it at one point in the last 33 years)) Is there anything special about the locknut I can't seem to find a new one from any of the Jeep parts vendors. What would be a good torque setting for this nut.

    The FSM recommends 130-170 ft-lb.
