This is going to sound stupid but I got a new v8 for the jeep complete which the guy said he could never get running because of fuel issues. Well, I got it all hooked up and in and am not getting fuel. check the fuel pump and the manual and it looks like the pump is upside down to the picture in the manual. can anyone with this engine tell me if there stock mechanical fuel pump has the inlet/outlet lines on the top or bottom. Or if you have a pic on the engine that would be great. If the thing is upside down that would sure be why he never got it running of all the stupid things.. :)

    thanks!

I have no idea if this is relavant, but on my i6 th lines are on th top iirc, and if it were a mechanical pump would it not but only go in one way, ya know with the arm and such. But I could be really out in left field here, the arm on the pump angles up when I installed mine. I would assume they would use the same basic design. But like I said left field and so.

there are 2 different versions of the amc fuel pump. either will work, as long as the lines meet up. I happen to have the one that points "down", while another 304 i saw points "up". As long as the lines are connected, either should work.

When you checked to see if you were getting fuel...did you do it with the fuel line off the carb? Put the open line in a can and crank it over a few times?

Yes, open line at carb, crank and nothing. the pump has lines pointing down and that is how it came. frame hose went right on and I blew it out so nothing in it. new rear tank and sending unit, etc. so it appears to just not be pumping but it is a new pump cause I got a reciept for it with engine stuff and it appears brand new also.

IIRC the pump cannot be installed upside down.

I wonder if the pump lever was installed above the cam eccentric.

you are correct, you cant bolt it on upside down, BUT there are two different versions.
On one the diaphgram falls above the center line of the mounting bolts amd the intake and output point up, and on the other it falls below and the intake/output point down. They both fit, it only changes the routing of the lines a bit. I ran into that problem with my cj. I got one, and needed the other.

makes you wonder why someone would get rid of an engine because of fuel issues :?

Probably the easiest thing to do would to pull the fuel pump away from the motor and look to see if the 'face' of the pump arm is positioned to ride on the lobe correctly. Or you could just install an electric fuel pump...
