Hello all, I have baught a 67 cj5 and have had a Sm 420 tranny givento me and it is in good shape. I am running a 231 or 3.8 buick right now and I have read the other info that this sight has on the swap, but I was told if the tranny does not have the ribbs that there is a way to put my dana 18 to it without the adapter is this true?

    Thanks Ranger Joe

I have never read of this possibility. The first thing that comes to my mind about mating your D18 to a sm420 without adapter is the 420 does not have the "Texas " bolt pattern found on the D18 input side. Your 420 should bolt up to the motor without any adapter though. Those more knowing on this will weigh in I'm sure.

    nickmil In mothballs.

You have to have an adapter kit. The transfer case has a different bolt pattern than the back of the transmission so will not bolt up and the SM-420 in stock form has no provision for holding the transfer case input gear in the right location or even to bolt up. Whomever told you it could be done without an adapter, I'd really like to see how they did it if they weren't blowing bullpuckey. Nickmil
