I have opened the diff cover on a new project cj5, 1974, to find the differential is locked. It is not welded it appears to be a spool. It does not have spider gears, the axle ends are joined by a very stout key of sorts. Anyone have an idea of what I have?
    Thanks

Sounds like a spool. It's basically a chunk of steel that the axles slip into and a flange to mount the ring gear to.

Thanks, I've added a photo. Is it easy to replace? I do want to do a fair amount of street driving.

Mini spool perhaps? Hard to tell from the pic. Definately looks like an open diff carrier.

Looks like a mini spool to me. Go to the wrecking yard and pull some spider and side gears out of a D44 and replace it with them.
