I need some brainstorming here...I need a way to latch down the passenger seat in SSDutch.

I bought one of these gate latches:

But it's designed to work attached to a vertical surface rather than horizontally on the floor. I'm also not big on the idea of that sticking up from the floor to be stepped on, and it also looked like a potential rattle.

I also have one of these:

Which might work - it's just that I'd have to cut the carpet where the body attaches to the floor.

IIRC Dutch had the original seat latch which looked like a w/s latch - but I can't recall which part was mounted on the floor vs. the seat. Does anyone have a pic of the original setup?

I'd prefer something that just worked with a footman loop attached to the floor. Actually...now that I think about that approach with some double-sided velcro around the seat frame might work too.

    Any other ideas?

Here is what my orgin look like. I can't think of any store bought items that would work. If it were me I would try and make one. Keep in mind that what ever you do you will have to have some kind of height adjustment. If it is down too low, then the seat will ride on it and not the 2 seat legs, and if it is too high, the legs will hit and not let the latch close just right. I found on the factory latch, you have to adjust it just right or the seat will rattle :(

Thanks Mike...that's what I remember. SSDutch doesn't have that accomodation on the seat frame, and I really don't want to get into welding there with the seats all done.

I have an idea I'm trying - using a footman loop on the floor with a nylon strap and pinch-type clasp similar to this:

I'll need to do some garage sewing with fishing line, but if it works it should allow for some adjustment.

I would think that your idea would work pretty good. When I took mine apart to paint, and then replaced it, I had a heck of a time getting it adjusted just right. It would eather be riding on the hook or too loose and the seat would rattle like mad. It took me quite a few tries to get it just right. With your idea, you could just pull the strap and make it tight and be done.:)

    Good idea, failed in mockup.

The angles and length of the strap with the clasp in there are such that even with the strap really tight there would have been an inch of movement in the seat before the strap limited it.

I just noted I can expose the rear 1/2" of the seat frame - and get either a footman loop or eyebolt right under it. I should be able to connect those two points with something that will work.

Mike, I used a hood latch pin through the back floor & a tab with a hole through it affixed to the seat frame, you might be able to do the same thing with an eye-bolt through the seat frame.

My A1 has one added like the second one in your first post. They did not use the little receiver piece, however, the pin just extended over the foot of the seat mount. It actually works fairly well...

I used a military tie down strap in my MB over the foot rest that's in the backseat and around the seat tube. That works tremendous, but I never flip the seat up.

I use a wing nut, as mentioned earlier. It works very well, but can be a little frustrating when you need to get into the tool box a lot - like I do.

When I was in grade school I used to have those backpacks with the little metal latches that you could twist to hold the cover down. They would match up with a rectangular hole when twisted one way, and then squeeze down on it when turned the other way to hold the cover down. I think that must be what was being described earlier, but thought I would mention it anyway. If you had the time to work with it awhile, it seems like this kind of thing could be fabricated in the average garage....

Here's how I mounted my passenger seat in order to get access to the storage compartment. With the high back seats, I couldn't tilt it forward enough to open the compartment, so when i have to, I just lift out the seat.

Thanks for the ideas guys...I had another brainstorm last night.

I think if attach a small chunk of angle iron to the inner back part of the seat frame I can make a spare Jeep hood tie-down work. The height is pretty close, and then there'd be some tension on the seat.

Used to do that in Dutch, but it won't work with the TJ style belts I have now in SSD.

Pictures remind me of trunk latches in Hondas.

The gate latch would work if you put the movable part on the seat and the stationary part on the floor. I think it would rattle though.

FTW! I like it Mike, so much that I intend to use it in my flatty. (Just as soon as I swap out the '3A passenger seat for the '2A seat I've had for a coupla years..)

while innovative, I would rather see something more secure for safety purposes...I can see the movement allowing the seat to launch in a sudden stop..your view on this might be different.
