Hey guys. Having problems getting my 74 CJ-5 to run smooth. It has a 304 with an edelbrock set up. 600cfm performer series. I had a hard time finding anyone in Los Angeles that even new what a carbuerator was let alone work on one. I took it to a shop that suggested that I add electronic ignition which I had them do and when I picked it up it ran the smoothest it has ever run but by the time I got it home it was running like $%&! again. I think the timing mark is off because when I time it where it is supposed to be I can barely keep it running. The shop said they think the floats are sticking in the carb but the carb only has maybe a couple thousand miles on it. Do the edelbrock carbs come out the the box ready to run? And I have messed with the mixture but it still runs rough. Help!!!
    Thanks

Oh and I have replaced the cap, rotor, wires, plugs, and added another fuel filter near the carb. The vacuum lines are working also.

If it ran good when you left the shop, what could have changed by the time you got home? I wonder if the distributor hold down bolt was not tightened enough, and perhaps the distributor moved, which changed the timing. Was the bolt loose when you re-timed it?
Carbs are set to run out of the box, but usually some minor tweaking is required to your specific engine. It's easy to get carried away with this stuff. When you change carb, timing, ignition, or other settings, you have to be patient and make one change at a time. Take it for a ride, come back, and make another change.
    Good luck.

Yeah I checked the distributor. It was tight. I even marked a line on the hold down bracket and the distributor to make sure it wasnt moving. I am going to take the top off and make sure the floats look ok and then go from there. Thanks

if you let it cool down, does it run good again until it gets warm? Could be a thermostatic choke problem?
